Counselling job

So I’ve been interested in becoming a counsellor but I’ve heard that apparently it’s unstable , people do it part time and can’t secure a job? Is this true and is it this bad? I’ve also heard that to work abroad as a counsellor you need a masters and higher training whereas in the UK you don’t?
