Open university psychology with counselling question

Hello, the course details for psychology and counselling with the Open University say that the course doesn’t qualify you to work in the profession and that you would need further training?
Does anyone know what this further training is? Or what this means? Is the degree pointless?

That is true of every psychology degree. You'll always need further education and training, which will depend on what you wish to pursue!

If you want to work as a counsellor, you need professional counselling training. The Psychology with Counselling degree with the OU is an academic course, not professional training. It is not useless, though, as it is accredited by the BPS, so makes you eligible to go onto further psychology study and training if you decide to do that. I did this course as I wanted a BPS accredited psychology degree, but also had an interest in counselling. I then completed professional counselling training by doing level 3 and 4 counselling courses at a local college. I then also trained as a high intensity CBT Therapist, which is what I am doing now.

I hope this helps!

Hi! Most specific clinical jobs such as counselling, mental health nursing, psychiatry etc. will require further training past undergraduate level. This does not at all mean that the degree itself is pointless, all psychology degrees are designed to provide a broad overview of the discipline to allow people to find their passion and specialise later on, as well as develop transferable skills for all sorts of different industries. The main thing that makes a psychology degree 'worth it' is the BPS accreditation, which allows you to go into further clinical training as it meets the base level requirements for being a psychologist in the UK.
Good luck with everything!
