Is it too late to join a society in January?

I had full intention to join a society but couldn’t find any that suited me. Now that I’ve been here for a few months I’ve found a few societies that I’ve taken an interest in, but I’m too scared that everyone has made close nit friend groups within those societies… especially the ones that have weekly events

I really regret not joining them sooner but I just never got around to it, or should I just wait until second year to start going to them?

Hey!

No, I don't think so! A lot of unis will also have another society fair in January anyway! I understand how you feel about worrying people will already have friends, but the whole point of society is to put yourself out there and make friends so I'm sure you will still be welcomed! Also if your uni does have a January society fair then I'm sure you won't be the only new joiner either!

Best of luck with everything!

Hi Anonymous,

I definitely don't think it's too late to join a society in January!

A lot of universities have something called 'refreshers' in January and they have fairs which you can go to and look at the different societies on offer. If yours has this it may be worth going along and talking to the people running the societies you are interested in. They may have free trial sessions as well where you can try it out and see if you enjoy it. A lot of new people will join around January time so you won't be the only new person don't worry. The social aspect of societies means you won't be left out as there will be lots of activities which involve everyone so there will be lots of opportunities to make friends with everyone, even if they know each other already.

It's definitely worth a try, you may love it! And if it's not for you, you can always rejoin next year but you may as well try now if it's something you are interested in.

Good luck!

Hi Anon,
Its absolutely not to late to join a society in January. I've always found societies a really friendly and welcoming place as everyone there has a common interest, so i'm sure if you go to one of there weekly socials they'll be more than welcoming. Also might be work keeping an eye out for an alternative freshers fair, as i know Lancaster do a smaller fresher fair in January or society taster events, if your nervous about just turning up to a weekly social.
Hope this helps!

Hi Anon,

It's perfectly okay to join societies at any time of the year. January can also be a good time as many universities have students starting in January so societies will be expecting a good few more people to join.

From my experience, all societies are very welcoming of newcomers no matter the time of year. In one of my societies, we had people join just last week!

I understand that you are feeling nervous, and that's totally okay 🙂. Just remember that these are people who share an interest with you.

Good luck!

Hi!
It's definitely not too late, in fact I plan on doing this too. This is very common and although their may be people who have already become close friends, if you are joining a society with them that means you already have something in common!

Hope this helps, Faye

Hi!

It’s definitely not too late to join a society in January! I joined a society in January and they were more than happy to have new members!

I’m not sure about other universities, but at Lancaster University, we run a ReFreshers Fair, which is basically a smaller version of the Freshers Fair and is held in January! This is to encourage students to join societies! Around this time, societies will also hold free taster sessions so it’s a really great opportunity to try out many different societies!

I hope this helps!

Hi there,

Not at all, January is a great time for you to join a society as you've had time to settle yourself into uni life, you now know your class schedule and what free time you have to enjoy socialising. Joining a society is great fun and allows you to meet likeminded people outside of your course. Universities have new students starting in January and as others have mentioned there is usually a refreshers event where it would be good for you to connect with some societies you are interested in and go along to taster sessions where everyone is welcoming.

All the best, 😊

Hi there,

No, it's not too late. I have joined society mid-term as well. There is nothing scary about it, just pursue what you enjoy.

Believe me, there is a much bigger chance to regret not joining in January, than to regret joining.

You will like it!

Let me know if you have questions,
Ilya
