How many references should I put into my English essay

Im currently doing a 2,500 word essay and I have 3-4 individual sources with about 6 individual critical quotes (One for each paragraph) and then obviously book quotations for the book im studying. I was wondering how many sources and references should I do? I can't do too much as referencing counts towards my wordcount. I would love if you're able to help!!!!!

Please check not to put too many nor too few references. About 10 - 20 for a 2500-word essay would be alright. Try to make as many of them as possible academic or scholarly. Do this by mostly relying on journals for the online research. You can access most of them for free and others though your university online library.
