Uni of Leicester new Pharmacy course worth it?

Uni of Leicester have just introduced an MPharm course and I'm looking at applying as it's close to home and I'm not sure if I want to move away so gives me the choice. However this would be their first year of running the course and I'm not sure whether this would be a disadvantage compared to going somewhere well established with their course, or possibly an advantage as they could potentially put more effort in for the first years.
If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated!
Hi @xeleanorsmith

Whilst the Pharmacy course itself is brand new, the School of Healthcare at the University of Leicester has more than 40 years of experience & expertise in Health education. You will be taught by experienced pharmacists, many of whom have been involved in teaching elsewhere.

For the first three years, you will join other healthcare students from across the College of Life Sciences (Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Diagnostic Radiography, Operating Department Practitioners) in a series of inter-professional teaching and learning sessions. Learning alongside other healthcare students is ideal preparation for the workplace environment.

During the course, you will develop your knowledge and skills through a mix of academic study and work-based learning. We believe that gaining practical, real-world experience is one of the best ways to develop the professional competencies demanded of a pharmacist. Starting in your first year, throughout the MPharm you will spend over 40 weeks on clinical placement in a wide range of settings.

If you have any further questions about the course, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us here at Leicester - [email protected].

Hi, can I apply to this course if I study Biology, Maths and English Language at A Level? I really want to study Pharmacy and it looks like you're the only University who will accept me. Also, is it likely I might fail the first year if I do get in?

Hey @scruffy-surprise

So the entry requirements for A- level students as mentioned on the university website is ABB, of the three A-Levels, two must be science subjects including Biology or Chemistry and one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths or Psychology. So yes you can apply for this course!!

It does not mean you are likely to fail your first year at all, if you find yourself needing help, the university offers you a personal tutor, peer mentor and more support for you to feel more confident!

You can read more about entry requirements and contextual offers to see if you are eligible for one here.

Also here's all the support the university offers current students.

Let me know if you have any more question, I would be happy to answer 🙂

Hi Sumayyah,

Thanks a lot for the reply, its definitely reassured me! I don't live very close so will have to commute 2 hours, which isn't an issue in my eyes, seeing as I can study my dream course at a great university, but how would you say the student life is there?
Hey @scruffy-surprise

Sorry for the late reply 🙂

There's an amazing social life at Leicester, there are more than 200 societies which you can be a part of as soon as you join university. They often run weekly events which allows you to meet others and socialise with people studying at your university.

Personally, I have met most of my friends through societies, and we enjoy going to coffee shops together often after our lectures as there are many nice ones near campus. There is more information on Student life about what some of students at Leicester get up to and things you can do in the city off campus!

There is an O2 Academy in the Students' Union that hosts many gigs and events, the local Odeon cinema, our own arts centre Attenborough Arts and De Monfort Hall.

You're also close to the Curve theatre, the Showcase De Luxe cinema and Phoenix Arts.

While Leicester has its own unique student life, it's also well-connected to nearby cities like Nottingham and Birmingham, which offer additional options for those looking to explore different scenes.

Overall, Leicester provides a fantastic blend of student life experiences, personally I have had an amazing time at Leicester, have you had a chance to visit our campus yet?

Hi there,
I'm thinking about applying for 2025 admissions cycle, are you still being accredited by GPhC, also, do you offer an elective abroad in the later years?

Hi @Sarina432

Sorry for the delay in response!

The course has now passed stage 3 of the accreditation process and is provisionally accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), and we are working towards full accreditation the standard procedure for a new MPharm degree.

There are 7 steps towards full accreditation and details of what is involved can be found on the pharmacy regulations website. As you can see it will be sometime before we do receive the full accreditation however we fully expect to do so based on the recent outcome.

In terms of abroad elective opportunities, this is something the University is exploring to offer. As this is a new course, this is one of the things that needs to be developed.

Please do not hesitate in getting in touch if you have any further questions. Our supportive team are very responsive on the [email protected]. We’d also be delighted to welcome you to an open day and you can sign up for our upcoming open days on www.le.ac.uk/opendays.

Thank you
