As far as I am aware, there is no limit to the number of societies you can be a part of.
However, you'd have to consider your schedule and how expensive this would be. You may not have many classes scheduled in your week, but you have to factor in time for assignments, studying, relaxation, essential tasks, and other socialization too. Some societies also require a fee to join, so be sure to consider this in your budget.

You can be apart of as many societies and you would like to be!! For example, during my first-year at City, I was apart of 5 societies. You can be a part of the society, but not have to go to each event that is being hosted by them - which is something I often did. Now, I am in my final-year and am apart of 2 societies but I am President of one of them so I spend more time with one.
In City, University of London, we give our students the opportunity to not only join societies, but if they cannot find one that works for them, they are given a £50 start-up fund to create their own society and begin hosting events.
The amount of societies you join, is completely your choice! Do whatever is best for your schedule and works for you. I had more free time in my first-year so I let myself socialise through societies.
I hope this helps!

Unlimited, technically, although you're limited by the work you may or may not have to do and any clashes between societies. I'm a member of 6 societies (that I can think of, I've probably joined more but I'm forgetting them). Regrettably, three of them meet on Monday evenings, so I used to just alternate but now I kind of just stick to the debate society, unless one of the other two Monday evening societies are doing something particularly interesting. Society #4 meets on Tuesday evenings so that's nice and since the start of the second semester I'm religiously going to that one. Societies #5 and #6 don't meet regularly so they aren't that big of a commitment.
Usually there are no limits on how many societies you can be part of, you could always join or drop out of societies at any point throughout the year. However, some societies may have membership fees. Additionally, it is important to find a good balance between social and work life at University.

As far as I am aware, you can join as many as you want to! Most universities have a wide range of societies and there is usually something for everyone, whether you want to join or not.
However, as others have said they can get quite expensive - this is something I didn't realise about societies was how expensive they can get with membership fees and socials and then depending on what society you may have costs such as uniforms and travelling for matches etc. So I would look into this before committing to any.
I'm in one society and this is perfect for me as I enjoy it but I still have lots of time for myself and to do things away from the society. I would say 1/2 is probably a good amount but it does depend how much time you would need to put into them. Some sports societies have multiple training sessions a week plus a match and then a social but some others you only meet once a week or even once a month.
I would go to the societies fair and see which ones you like the look of and go to taster sessions as you aren't committed to joining. Then decide which ones you likes and go from there.
