The Student Room Group

how to start a club outside of school- advice please!

hi everyone!
me and two other friends are planning on forming a club in our local area, offering general advice on applications (for sixth form and for university e.g UCAS), subject content, extra curriculars, and basically how to stay sane as a student!
we’re based on altrincham.
we are:
free
casual times
available for in person and online advice
high achieving students, all of us received 8s and above in our gcses and are predicted a and a*s in our a levels
cover a variety of subjects, including:
english literature (a level)
english language (gcse)
maths (a level)
geography (a level)
history (a level)
french (a level)
german (gcse)
business (a level)
citizenship (gcse)
psychology (a level)
sociology (a level)
separate and combined science (gcse)
we’re new at this kind of thing, so are just asking for advice on the following:
names
how to advertise it
how to make it appealing for year 9+ students
whether to do drop in sessions or just zoom ones
how often? was thinking once every two weeks
two of us are already tutors so we have experience there.
any help would be greatly appreciated
many thanks
Sorry you've not had any responses about this. :frown: Are you sure you've posted in the right place? Here's a link to our subject forum which should help get you more responses if you post there.

names: academic allies, future first club. just use chatgpt and get a name you like, basically what i did.

get your school and others to arrange something, an assembly where you explain your ideas, will work. you need to show relatability, make friends as people would enjoy that, be confident in a hypothetical assembly, and be different in the sense that its different from a teacher. emphasis the selling point which is grades, ultimately. you said you tutored maybe give some achievements from it. advertise to parents as well sell the fact you tutor and would love to help their children do well but it needs to be with the child's interest.

to appeal to year 9s is tricky as most couldn't be bothered at all, so you would have to emphasise the "chill" times, and grades to get both sides, the ones who want to do well and the ones who want a good time. yr 10s will be a bit easier as a lot more people will care. yr 11s will be the easiest with the grades. you need to sell your vision and you will get people. ask people who belong in that year group, what they would like to see to make it appealing which requires people from here and in person.

do it once a week maybe, with a zoom class and alterate every week to in person. if you are in yr 13 make it more flexible. so to answer to question do both.

entirely up to you.

This sounds amazing, I’m sure you’ll have lots of interest! I’d probably go about making a social media account for it - insta would be ideal probably for teens. Get your friends to all post about it on their stories for more viewers. If you have friends in other schools make them do it too, basically exhaust all contacts by saying we’re a group of people willing to help, dm us for more info etc. You may want to recruit a more Stem a level focused friend to help just so you get ‘specialists’ in a variety of subjects at a level not just gcse.

Put polls on your stories - what do they want from the club?

Get your school to put it on their social media. Tell your teachers at your high school(s) to recommend it to high achievers at parent evenings in the younger years.

Show your credibility- make like a starting post on who you are and your qualifications and grades and aspirations. Just show them that you aren’t newbies (considering you’re making the club in the first place I don’t think you are).

I know I’ve recommended a very social media based approach but if it’s out of school I really think you should just exhaust all your contacts to see who’s interested.

i’m not sure about the others, but i feel a mix of drop ins and zoom sessions would work, or maybe each drop in could be recorded? i’m not sure, but i wish you luck
