University repute and prestige

How important is university repute and prestige in the STEM world? Does the uni you attend for undergrad hold much significance for those in stem? Realistically, are there certain unis and graduates of those unis, that people in industry and academia just don’t “respect” or generally hold in good regard? Referring to UK unis btw

It is only important so much as the university gives students the opportunity to acquire the kind of skills and knowledge that is required for the world of work. So for me, universities that offer sandwich courses are hands down better than those that don't as the sandwich year is that vital year that gives you real work experience.

As for rankings - that is purely a fiction dreamed up by the marketing departments of those universities that like to see themselves as a cut above the rest, although an what terms who knows. Take Manchester University for example. Their slogan is not "Highest employability" or "Best student experience" or "Highest earning research". No. It is 1824. If you go to Manchester, you are under no uncertain terms they have been going since 1824. So what?
