Is this common US career advice advice applicable to the U.K.?

“Never work too hard at a job. If you’re irreplaceable, they won’t promote you as they’ll need to find one or more people to do your job just as good”
I won't say it's universal but I've certainly heard it before. There's obv a wide range between someone who works hard and someone who is genuinely irreplaceable to the business in their current position.

Likewise if you overachieve in a team environment you can often end up not only getting other people work, but the unpleasant tasks they've all been putting off.
