ive been waiting for this thread (with dread ofc bc ahhhhh exams are close now)

i was wondering if anyone had any predictions for what the importance of being earnest and othello question could be?

for othello, my class were thinking perhaps 'relationship between desdemona and othello', maybe 'gender' but we felt like it was kind of covered last year with 'prejudice' and 'masculinity' in 2021.

for IOBE, i have no idea hahaha so feel free to share predictions for both

hi, so I'm a first year student at university now, and I understand how stressful this time was for me last year. I leaped from a C to an A so I just wanted to offer my notes for English and even some of my essay plans! If you're interested, please message - I would love to answer any questions you may have x

I'm struggling with writing Othello essays- I have all the content, but I don't think I'm engaging with critics or AO3 enough. It's hard to get it all down in one essay :/

Anyone have any tips for writing the essay as a whole? Maybe a structure or way of revising so I can hit these points?

I am in the same position as you! Critics are difficult because we never did it in lower school I reckon.

My teacher tells us that the best way to do it is to pick 3 main critics that you constantly refer back to and introduce them straight away in your introduction, that way you have something to go back to. I did this in my mocks and it worked as I was a few marks off an A.
With context, I just refer to setting and the position of said character in said setting. So, for example, Venetian women of the time (Desdemona, Emilia, Bianca) were seen as promiscuous which would explain the crude language often used to describe them. For Othello, referring back to his race and the position that puts him in is always a good way to get context in.

Structure wise, we got taught WHW (what how why). So make a point that coincides with your thesis, give textual references and analyse the language, and then link to context/critics.

hope this helps

Any Othello/Streetcar thoughts? I think for Othello something to do with deception or appearence vs reality might come up as that seems to be a big theme they haven't covered yet

In my class we were thinking that setting was likely for Streetcar because it's come up at AS level and has come up for almost all of the other plays before. Othello could also have a stagecraft based question, my teacher has been looking at those that are stagecraft based
