hmmmm GPs are fine for me and actually quite practical because I'd find the diseases that they diagnose appearing often quite common (e.g. rhinitis) If not, I may consider gastroenterology (my favorite specialty!!) because it's really fascinating (beautiful in some ways) and I'd like to get my hands onto using the endoscopy.

If you become a doctor, you have to take frequent examinations, whereas as a GP you don't...just a few in order to become a GP

I love the way some people, with clearly no knowledge at all of the subject, speak with such conviction.
I would like to be a GP.

Though that depends on a whole lotta' things, for example to I actually want to become a Doctor in the first place, and will I actually get in to Medical School. :p:

GPs ARE real doctors. Don't put them down just because you don't understand the system.

As for the other question - most people in med school don't want to be GPs, but about 50% will end up being one, for various reasons.

Ha I remember in my first year, one of the othopaedic surgeon started his lecture by telling us to shut the **** up (although rightly deserved) and that 50% of us will become GPs whether we like it or not as if that was a bad thing.

Sigh, I dunno why all you people are deciding your career before even getting into medical school. Get into uni first and enjoy that for awhile, how about that?

Someone should have told him being a GP is better than being a glorified carpenter. :p:

What about being a surgeon?

Now that's where I wanna be in 10 years time  (although this is probably subject to change :p:)

No way! Surgery all the way. I don't want to be a GP or a Dr.....I want to be a Miss or Mrs or even Ms. I'm sure all of you who have done your research know what i mean!

Relax, tis fine, fair point, point taken.

Ah the joys of being a prefresher.

Medical students have for generations slogged through years of hard/volumenous/irrelavent/frusting but very interesting work, all for the hope that one day, it might help a pt. It might not save their lives, but it might help them somehow. BUT,

Medical school is far more hyped up then it should be. Once you get here, it does not elevate you to the status of deity, people just expect you to be intelligent and work hard. You are not special. You can easily get money sex cars and money for far less debt and a far easier time. This is particularly true when you realise you can't go out because you know **** all for a tute the next day.

Think about why you want to be here, a fair few people who made it through the hoopla competition have doubts/are not happy. Its not worth it. You will spend many a happy hour thinking WTF is this.

Now, a 2k essay on serine proteases is a case in point.

Loooooooool.
I love how med applicants (some of them even without places!) can say certainly what they want to specialise in. Fact is: you'll probably end up doing something completely different.

I have no idea, personally. It's hard enough to choose a year-long BSc rather than a speciality for the rest of my life!

Do you want to be a doctor or a GP?

Nope.

you can make a bigger difference in people's lives by being a proper hospital doctor. I think that is better, and would like to go into ophthamology.
