Seems like a fair assessment.

I've now stopped attending Markov chains, so I'm not going to any IB courses :s

I really like Markov chains. I quite liked probability last year and Markov chains seem like a fairly decent extension of the IA Prob stuff, as well as the fact that the lecturer is really good (shame about his handwriting).

For year 1 and the second year it is pretty common to have some guy or girl who doesn't specialise in the subject. By no accounts will he or she have not used anything but what he or she does do would most likely be something deeper than most of what is covered in the first or second and it could have happened that it was when they were undergraduates was the time they had to cover the material they were lecturing [for instance he or she knows all the results but would have 'forgot' how to prove them].

I'm fairly sure the groups lecturer specialises in groups. He's not a 'bad' lecturer, once you get to understand his style (which is quite hodgepodge at the best of times) but I found groups fairly easy (perhaps in spite of) his lecturing style.

Methods: Some interesting stuff, decent lecturer, horrible examples sheets though

Analysis II: Enjoying a lot more than I thought (although the couple of lectures of pretty much solely definitions about norms weren't so good). Nice examples sheets, I've converted to a major analysis fan this year :yy:

Linear Algebra: Really really boring, but has started to pick up in the last couple of lectures.

Markov Chains: Probably my favourite course, and the best lecturer too.

Quantum Mechanics: Content is really interesting, shame the lecturer isn't so great... I have a really good supervisor so that just about makes up for it.

I've finally started to take an interest in this whole careers/internships business, although all I've decided so far is that I don't want to work for a bank...

I agree with this 100%. I saw you at the careers event: I talked to Metaswitch, Tessela and Ensoft, and made a really off-colour joke to the GCHQ guy, avoiding all the finance companies (apart from the PwC goodie bag), but I had a lucky break today and might have something over the summer that's completely separate to that.

Cool, good luck with that. I liked the look of Metaswitch and Tessela as well, and Sungard too. I suppose I should just get round to sending off some applications now...

Yeah, my friend dd a summer internship with Metaswitch over the summer and said it was really good (apparently they had ultimate frisbee pickup sessions every Tuesday lunchtime...) but between that, and a chance to work at JET, I'd pick JET any time tbh.

Couldn't be bothered with it?
Also, impressive stuff then!

Fell off my bike the other day, was unpleasant. Also went to an interview in London today, which I think went fairly well!

The cycle between the CMS and Mill Lane wasn't really worth it for just one lecture. Also, the lecturer is also my supervisor, so I will definitely get the most out of it anyway.

Which firm?

My QM supervisor appears to hate me, and I don't quite know why :frown:

Ah, seems reasonable. YS again this year?

YS? Prof. Kelly is lecturing it if that's what you're asking?

Different chap then, which was what I was asking!(Camchat has me in the habit of just initialling lecturers, don't know if it's TSR-wide policy, but seems to be the done thing there, so I just stick to it).

It's not really that exciting: one of my friends worked at JET over the summer and apparently their supervisor is looking for someone else this summer in addition and emailed them to ask whether they had any recommendations; since I live fairly close to JET (and them) I was put forward.
I keep meaning to get some information packs from the Careers Service next to the lecture rooms in Mill Lane, but I haven't been to lectures in days. Wish I'd been a bit bolder in choosing courses, perhaps doing either Galois Theory or prob and measure - it'd be a better way to spend my time rather than sleeping, plus they're closer to my average awakening time. Not sure what to make of this term, mathswise. I don't hate any of the courses, though the linear algebra lectures are dire and the methods example sheets about as fun as... as... dynamics. Quantum is often on the fringes of becoming interesting, but too much of it just feels like jumping through hoops. Analysis II is very well lectured though, several times I've felt a gaping hole of hunger in my stomach after methods but it's been pacified by analysis. Next term should provide more scope for interesting (pure) maths, with complex analysis, statistics and (eek) geometry. Now to get to writing a CV and some cover letters before the summer internship deadlines start rolling around.

There's no rule against naming lecturers, but I think it's avoided in Camchat because there are lecturers/supervisors on TSR (expecially for Oxbridge but also for other places), so might be in your best interest not to name them if being critical.

(As for myself I should do some more work - and I feel really lost in the Algebra course I'm doing. Not sure if it's the content or style of lecturing that is doing my head in. Either way I'm not understanding too much)
Weird that they're doing Maths as well.
Also I can't believe someone wrote "Can't take you seriously with that name" when it is clearly the most intellectually stimulating name around. I'm still waiting for someone to coin the name 'assmister'.

I know I'm bored with maths when I'm not even slightly pleased discovering what the condition is for cos(2π/n)\cos (2 \pi/n) to be trisectable.

Any hints for that question?(Handed in the sheet earlier, but I'm still fairly interested by it...)

Q(cos2πn)\mathbb{Q}(\cos \frac{2 \pi}{n}) is a subfield of a cyclotomic field.
Hello everybody. Long time, no chat.
