I am American..

I didn't realize how much people from different countries absolutely hate and resent the country that I absolutely love until I came across a post in this student website.

I know I am going to get bashed for this post, but I am already aware of that and am fine with that fact since I just want to understand other countries views.

I am American and I do know that our country isn't the best, but I am still proud to be born and raised here. For all of those who dislike me just because I am one, all I have to say is that you should really travel to see our country, to meet people here our different communities and backgrounds, and just to get to know more us instead of bashing us head on. I apologize for my rambling on, but if you were in my position what would you think? say? or even do?

I want to know what you dislike about my country and why? Please don't be too harsh, I am not trying to insult or piss off anyone. I am merely asking the question to understand peoples views and hear different opinions.

Actually, America probably gives the most British abuse. Abuse from the French doesn't count because they've had a long rivalry with us.

Plus, Americans don't realise it. Now THAT'S irony.

What do you mean 'punch above your weight'? Iraq has been successful, in my opinion (dictator overthrow, democracy established, peace and stability looking more promising, more equality between different ethnic groups and sects etc).

I wouldn't really consider myself an 'American'. I am more 'British' than 'American'.

The dude that writes conspiracy theories on a blackboard?

You're entitled to like your country. I'm entitled not to. Here's why (a few choice reasons, there are many more)

1.) You are home to more extreme religious fanatics / right-wing nutjobs per capita than any other country since Nazi Germany (with the possible exception of Iran).
2.) For the past 100 years you have flouted the sovereignty of countless other nations to further your own aims, values and religion.
3.) Recently, you set off a war which has cost hundreds of thousands of lives, and we still don't know why you did it.
4.) You re-elected Bush
5.) The Americans we get to see abroad tend to be loud, arrogant and somewhat brutish.
6.) You're sore losers.
7.) Some of you actually listen to Glenn Beck.
8.) Others amongst you considered voting for the bimbo-cum-lunatic that is Sarah Palin.
9.) You are a country built on immigration, and yet you are now doing your best to persecute immigrants.
oh and
10.) Despite the guaranteed right to freedom of speech, the liberty which is mentioned so often as sacred in your consitution, and so many other big statements, when a normal, everyday man tries to expose your inner dealings to the public, your leaders accuse him of terrorism and start an international manhunt for him.
11.) Socialism is practically a swearword in your country.

Of course no one is perfect, so here's a few reasons I do like your country.

1.) You are home to some of the most intelligent, witty and kind people in the world.
2.) You are home to the worlds finest universities.
3.) You elected Obama
4.) Family Guy
5.) Great TV in general actually
6.) American football (not quite as good as rugby but still awesome)
7.) You have an astounding amount of places that have amazing natural beauty.
8.) NYC

In my opinion, it's stupidly narrow-minded to dislike someone soley on account of their country of origin. Cultures differ, but that's no reason to tar all people in one country with the same brush.
There are stereotypes and charicatures about most nationalities. For example, while some people might view all Americans as obese and dumb, the English might be percieved as snobby tea drinkers, the French as smelly and the Swiss as a nation obsessed with nothing but watches and cheese. All ridiculous notions, of course.
Most people I've encountered, upon actually meeting someone from a different country are able to put aside various vague opinions they have on the country and judge that individual on their actual personality and own merits, rather than jumping to conclusions. There are the odd few that seem to think it's acceptable to voice assumptions...

I'm sad to hear you've come across people ****ging off your country, OP. I thought we were a nation of tolerance
