Am I the only one who didn't think it was that bad a paper :/

For the DNA in science I wrote about it's uses in:
- Forensic science - UNIT 5
- Identifying parents etc - UNIT 5
- Illigal animal trade where DNA fingerprinting is used(that was for my breadth of knowledge, read about it yesterday)
- Genetic fingerprinting - UNIT 5
- Gene therapy - Cystic fibrosis, and a new treatment discovered at Queens uni - UNIT 5
- Selective breeding (choosing desired alleles) for argriculture - UNIT 4
- DNA cloning, how it's done for medical or commercial uses, i.e. enzymes in washing powder - UNIT 1
- Comparing alleles to see relationships between species - UNIT 2
- Ethics- every unit

my thoughts cos i need to get it out my system....

WHERE WAS UNIT 5?! there was SOME references ... but that 4 marker on enzymes and some other questions i probably could have answered without doing revision at all! it was guess work :frown:

and i HATED the restriction mapping one...was already weak on that subject so not surprised i missed out 3 questions or so :frown:

BUT the essay made up for it. i wrote 5 cycles: carbon/muscle/calvin cycle/DNA replication and cardiac cycle. anyone else write 5 paragraphs and left it at that? cos some of my friends somehow wrote 7/8 CYCLES :eek:

hope all of yours went well. and if i fail...which i probably will...then atleast i'll help the grade boundaries to be low for us so it wont be THAT bad :smile:

If i just wrote about: the carbon cycle, the nitrogen cycle, the krebs cycle, and the calvin cycle, but in quite a bit of detail (i did 6 pages overall), would that be ok for 20/25 marks? :s-smilie:

Strictly speaking it's only pluripotent. If it were totipotent they'd be able to turn back into blastocysts.
I don't think AQA will be that picky, considering they taught us the wrong vocab in the first place.

Why are people so fussed about the absence of factual knowledge required? If it was just on simple recall then it would be easy. It has to test people's skills and intelligence. And anyway unit 5 is such a large span of chapters in the nt book, that the exam was never going to cover everything even if it was simple recall. and its your last bio unit, wouldn't people of understood what aqa biology is about?

i totally agree that its not just simple recall, but there should be some (AT LEAST a few) which are strong content based questions. A purely HSW paper + essay is not the best in my opinion. I understand that you should be able to apply it and make sense of application questions but max 50%...this was more like 95% of the questions were HSW...

Neurotransmitters are only produced in the pre-synaptic membrane; specific cholinergic recptors are only on the post-synaptic membrane. 1 mark I think for each(??).

Right im confused about the question where it asked you which ratio of growth medium or somthing like that you would use to grow plants using tissue culture, The only square with just plantlets in was with the ratio 50:10 so i therefore put 5:1, But there was test where they used 5:1 ratio but there was no effect ? was it because there wasnt enough ? but surely the ratio is the same ? hmmm

as long as you wrote good...im pretty sure thats more than enough...would have helped if you did a physiological process like cardiac i think but you should still get 20/25

the cycle question was a godsend, but me being the idiot i am missed out cell cycles D: i ended up writing about krebs,nitrogen,predator prey,carbon,menstrual and light independant

the rest of the paper was a total failure, i couldn't remember half the stuff and some questions...the iguana and body temp one? why did rate of o2 increase?!

i hope the grade boundries somehow save me...
