Never been able to until now :s-smilie:

Good stuff, hope it helps a little!

Wow!! Well done! When is it?
Aww thank you
Yeah haha the german thing is v difficult and im rapidly going off it!!

It's from this Sunday to Wednesday. Stick with the German; it sounds really interesting to me, and it'd be amazing to get really good at another language.
I think it's a bit far to say most of the students' time will be spent on proofs. It's just one module as far as I'm aware.

A proof is basically a way of guaranteeing that a mathematical theory works for every value.

For instance, n+n=nxn
That's only true for n=2 but isn't true for anything else.

So a proof would basically be validating that it works for all values of n (which in this case it doesn't)

Mathematical induction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematical_induction) is one way of proving mathematical statements.

My teacher always describes it as a staircase.
Induction proves that the first step works, and if you are on any step on the staircase that the next one will work no matter which one it is.

They're pretty interesting if you like pure maths though

Aww yeah it would be good to be able to speak another language properly...its just so hard!!
Good luck with the interview!!

Got all 5 offers for Bsc Mathematics! Applied to Nottingham, Birmingham, Leicester, Sheffield & Aston (back-up)
wanting to go to University of Birmingham! ...from whom I received an offer today
were the last ones to reply! Conditional AAB (with A in Mathematics)
Who else is thinking of going to Uni of Birmingham to study Maths?

Why Birmingham over Nottingham/Sheffield if you don't mind me asking?

Got a rejection from Oxford yesterday, and an invitation to interview at Manchester today

Sorry to be a bore but:

[br]2n=n2[br][br]n22n=0[br][br]n(n2)=0[br][br][br]2n=n^2[br][br]n^2-2n=0[br][br]n(n-2)=0[br][br]
So 0 is also a solution.

Oh dear lord! How did I not notice that!?
I guess when I was trying to think of proofs and all that I thought of the simplest statement that would get my point across and I messed it up... FAIL! Thanks for calling me out on it:smile:
I'll definitely make sure I check my maths next time!
Sent my application off on the 25th of nov..
Heard back from Manchester a few hours ago for an interview on the 6th of Feb...
Anyone attending it XD?
Has anyone else got a letter from Bath concerning the department open days? If so what date did you get and are you going? I went to the open day in September so I'm not sure if I should go again (says if you've visited before you don't need to come but yeah "/). Plus I live up in Scotland so it's a bit of a trek down to bath.

P.s. Don't forgot to add yourself to the Mathematics Applicants 2012 stalking page if you already haven't!

Hi, I've applied for actuarial science, and thought here might be a good place to get some advice...

I've received offers from City, Southampton, Heriot Watt, UEA and Kent.

I think I'm going to firm Kent, it offers all possible exemptions, and a year in industry. How is Kent for Maths related courses and/or Actuarial Science?

However, I don't know, out of UEA or HW, which to insure with. UEA is AAB, Heriot Watt ABB...UEA is a year in industry, HW encourages it but its not part of the actual course iykwim. HW is really far away, UEA is closer but I really, really wasn't keen on the accomodation (my loan barely covers it, so I want to feel comfortable seeing as I'll be starving to pay for it!) Which one would be better? :s-smilie:
I really want to tell you guys what happened in my interview!! ie questions... alas i cannot =[

well it started well when I was told that they are interviewing less this year than any other year lol. Then I feel like my interviews went well but im apprehensive to say that. They kinda followed a pattern of easy questions to harder ones and the prompts increased. The last question in my second interview required quite a few hints but i got there eventually. Saying that, I would not be surprised if i was rejected lol. Oh and the people were SOOO nice.

Good luck with actuarial  my mums an actuary and although I'm interested in it so may do some modules I'm not doing a specific degree in it. But anyway.....

I'm a bit like you. I live in York and so Heriot-watt which I've applied to and got an offer from is a long way away for me too. It's a shame as I do like tbd uni and city but its too far :frown: its a lovely uni though so it just depends whether you a) want to go to Scotland b) be in the middle of nowhere......

I'm in the Midlands though, so even further on. Kents a four hour drive (with the current roadworks anyway), and I can get to UEA in under 2 hours :s-smilie: Nearest would be London but I just don't want to go there

What kind of actuarial work does your mum tend to do? I'm more interested in investment currently, but I obviously don't need to specialise just yet
