Music application 2013

Hi,
Anyone else looking to apply for music in 2012? Just wondering where people are thinking of applying and how they're going about it?

Thinking of applying UCAS:
Leeds College of Music
Goldsmiths University
Glasgow University
York University
Manchester University

CUKAS:
Trinity Laban Conservatoire
Birmingham Conservatoire
Royal College of Music

Any thoughts?
Thanks

I'm doing a Music BMus at Huddersfield which I couldn't recommend enough. If you're too good for an ex-poly (;-)), Lots of my muso friends opted for the RNCM which I've been told is fantastic for both Performance and Composition routes.

On UCAS I'm applying for King's, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, Sheffield (preference in that order) but will try and focus on jazz and popular music while I'm there with my voice. I don't know much about RNCM but heard it's really good but also heard the joint course with them and Manchester is SO hard to get into! Any other courses I should look at, considering my predictions are now at 3 A's and a B at a level?
I applied this year & will hopefully be starting at Surrey in September, so if anyone wants any help/advice just let me know  I'd really recommend Surrey actually. Not many people have heard of it (not where I live anyway! but just in general too) but the course there, in my opinion, is really well-rounded. And if you want you can choose to do a 4-year sandwich course with a year in a job placement - I haven't chosen to do that but it'd be a really good pathway to getting a job in music administration, music technology, things like that. People should definitely consider it!

Nottingham is lovely too, as well as Bristol and Sheffield, also Huddersfield (especially if you want more of a performance focus), York and Goldsmiths. I didn't apply to conservatoires but wish I had - I know people studying at RNCM who absolutely love it there.

If anyone needs any help with anything in the near future just message/quote me or whatever
I'm applying for Music in 2013 too! York is my first choice and I'm also applying to Durham (depending on how much I like the campus on the Open Day, I've been told it's a bit stuck up?) Edinburgh, either Bristol or Leeds (can't decide atm!) and Music with Musical Theatre at Chichester.
I'm not applying for any conservatoires because I prefer the atmosphere at unis and I want more of a mix of modules and disciplines.
What are you thinking of specialising in? At the moment I'm thinking composition and conducting but I really love performance too. I'm really thinking of looking into Opera and Musical Theatre as a Musical Director and Composer. That's the dream! :')
Hi everyone,
I've just been through all the CUKAS stuff last year and am off to Birmingham Conservatoire this September. If any of you have any questions (no matter how stupid you think they are), feel free to ask me and I'll try to help,
xx

Can I offer some (ahem, non-biased, obviously ) advice? You're applying to conservatoires, so I'm guessing you want to focus on performance - why Glasgow Uni? They have a notoriously bad reputation for performance (even on the BMus. It's worse on the MA - there's no opportunity to perform until 3rd year!) and there's hardly any included in the course compared to other places. I know so many people who have gone to Glasgow for Music and not enjoyed it, because they don't get the chance to perform regularly as part of their course. They are also really strict about what you can include in your Honours recital, if you choose to go down that route - you just need to look at the Glasgow Uni Music Memes page on Facebook to see that. No concertos, no arias etc.

If you're interested in the city, why don't you apply to RCS? If you're applying because you'd quite like to go to a Scottish uni, why not Edinburgh? The course at Edinburgh, while still "academic" as opposed to the more practical courses offered at conservatoires, teaches a lot of practical and performance skills. There's performance, keyboard skills, aural training etc. etc.

I'm starting my BMus at Edinburgh in September, so if you want to find out more, I'm open to questions.

Okay Manchester is now my first choice after the open day yesterday- the city, the course, the facilities, the concert hall, the student union etc. everything about it i LOVED! Also looking at birmingham possibly, is that any good? I want to go to a russel group university and focus on jazz/popular music- so hopefully my choices are Manchester, King's, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Bristol and Sheffield. What would everyone say about these universities and the style of teaching, their specialities etc.

I'm not so sure some of your choices (e.g. King's) are that suited to focusing on jazz/popular music. Why not look somewhere like Leeds, Southampton or Goldsmiths? :dontknow:

I agree with the commenter above, from what I've read some of the Russell Group unis, Manchester included (I live in Manchester so I've visited there a number of times), are a bit more academic and classically focused. On some university websites you can look at lists of current modules and classes offered so that might give you a better idea of what the degree might involve as even if they have the same ucas code they can be very different! :')

EDIT: I just want to point out that Manchester has an amazing night life and fracking AWESOME music scene so it's a really cool city to live and study in. Manchester Academy, (the music venue in the student union) has been the home of the greatest gigs I've seen in my life and some of the greatest musicians, imho :')

I'm going to the Durham open day next Saturday and York the Wednesday after. Anyone else hitting them up? :')

Anyone else at the Goldsmiths open day yesterday? I really, really loved it; the course seemed to have just the right balance between practical and theoretical elements and the whole place had a good feeling to it. I did ask about the audition/interview but they seemed to be quite vague... Anyone know how tough the competition is? (for the classical BMus) I'm taking a gap year & in year 13 now, so if all goes well on results day I hope I'll get an unconditional from Goldsmiths. I'm unsure about where else to apply, though. I live in London and really want to stay here, so I've been considering KCL, but I've heard the course is heavily theory-based, anyone know more..?

I wanted to go to the Goldsmiths open day but couldn't get there as I live quite far away! Any one offer any more feedback on that?
and I have changed my mind about Manchester purely due to the grades that they want, I went to the Leeds Uni Open Day on Friday and it really impressed me! They talked about a new year in industry in the third year which can be taken in the UK or abroad, something that really interests me.
Regarding the Glasgow Uni thing...
Thanks for that info, I didn't know the thing about Honours recital so that's interesting information, thankyou!

Hi everyone,

Thinking of reapplying for 2013. Originally applied for 2012 entry but due to certain circumstances, strongly considering taking a year out.
Applied for 2012 on piano, but now I'm almost sure that I'm going to reapply on trombone. Hopefully to these colleges:

RNCM
Birmingham Conservatoire
RCS

Anyone else taking a year out??
Hi, I'm studying music at Newcastle if anyone has any questions about that (I'd really recommend it btw )

I visited Huddersfield last year! The accommodation is a 15 minute bus ride away (I think) in the middle of nowhere, terrible when there's snow or bad weather haha, but it's like a big student village. It's got its own gym, supermarket and even its own pub! From what I remember it was also the only uni I visited where they allowed you to take a car  as far as rooms are concerned I reckon they were just the average room you'd get at a student village type place.

Liverpool is your best bet, followed by Southampton
I agree that Liverpool would be your best choice- it has an Institute of Popular Music and has been well known for a while as being a good place to go if you're interested in studying popular music.
