Sorry, I know you posted this 3 weeks ago but just had a quick question! I've also got an offer from Durham to study Computer Science. Durham, in the overall league tables is very high up, however when it comes to Computer Science it's hitting the late teens/early 20s in the rankings. This slightly bothers me.. As much as I want to go to a good uni, get a fab job etc I also do actually want to have a good education in the Computer Science deparment. Just wondered if you could shed any light on what you think about the department, lectures etc? And also what languages you learn as part of the course. Thanks in advance :smile::smile::smile:

Hi,

I also have an offer to read CS at Durham and I am currently torn between Durham and Bristol.

Durham is leading the way overall, but just like d_jukes above, I am also concerned about the relatively low ranking for the department.

I am also a little concerned about the apparent emphasis on 3D TV - This appears to be the major theme for the post-application open day in March, and compared to Bristol's pre-offer topics looks to be lagging behind.

Any advice would be very welcome.

Thanks.

I'm in the exact same position, with a dilemma between Durham and Bristol. With also the same concerns!!

So any reply to this would be greatly appreciated

Hey guys, just got an Unconditional Offer for Computer Science with Foundation at Durham! I´m really looking forward to go visit the University...

The foundation year is at Queen's Campus (I think) and I still want to find out about accommodation and how to apply...

Overall the University + Course look great.

Any concerns/tips you guys can give me?

Hi, I'd really appreciate if you could give some information on what you didn't like about the course and what they didn't offer that they claimed to on the open day? I'm trying to decide between Bristol and Durham at the moment. Thanks.

Hi all,

Sorry about not replying, the last few weeks have been absolutely hectic here in terms of workload; havent had a chance to come on here at all.

In terms of choosing between Bristol and Durham, thats entirely up to you and I wouldnt like to persuade you to go to somewhere you wont enjoy the next 3 years at. The 2 universities might be similar in terms of reputation but the cities are very different and I think thats an important factor when it comes to choosing a university or at least it was for me.

In terms of the course here, it has changed slightly and youre likely to know more about it than I am; so far ive learnt Java and were learning C too, before I came to university I knew web languages but you learn PHP, HTML, CSS and JavaScript too (if they still offer that module?) I think the computer scientists do a bit more of C and some Haskell too.

I like the department, the lecturers are friendly and helpful and most provide good lecture notes too. Im not sure why its so low down on the tables, its probably to do with postgraduate stuff, we seem to lack funding to be able to hold onto a lot of students who want to MScs/PhDs. Im not too sure what youre asking about 3DTVs? Ive never seen anything about that here and it hasnt bothered me at all, if thats something that Bristol specialise in or have links with and it interests you, go for it. Ive had no problems getting internships though, although ive been mainly aiming for financial institutions I know a few people at IBM and the likes.

Thanks for the reply. 3D graphics and visualisation are the dominant topics in the programme for the Durham offer holders day in 2 weeks time. It was also on the programme of the open day last September. It didn't really impress me, so I was worried that it was going to be a major part of the course. I am pleased to hear that you have not come across it!

The third year CS students at Bristol gave the impression that they were having to beat off employers with a ****** stick! One even got an internship in London supposedly paying £1k a week. Have you had to be very pro-active to get internships or are there plenty of companies visiting and touting for business?

Please take your time to reply if you are still busy. Thanks.

They may well be going in that direction now, I have done a bit on graphics which I quite enjoy but its only been a submodule so far, at lot of the stuff you see in the open days you probably wont even do until 3rd year if you do it at all. On my open day we watched a space video in 3D which as a joint effort between CS and Physics I think? I havent done anything about it ever since and I doubt I will next year, it was probably a final year project for somebody or even a masters student. Im sure they gave that impression but in reality its quite different, im not in 3rd year so I dont know of anyone being headhunted, every week we get employers coming in to try and persuade us to apply to them. Lets just say I applied for as many internships as possible, got the first one I went for and then declined the rest and they were big names like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, etc.

I am still ridiculously busy, this term is a big one for 2nd years; its been pretty much non-stop for the past 6 weeks or so. In terms of what ive been doing; 3D computer graphics (openGL), a Facebook app, a networks project and designing a piece of software for an Android device where we have to go through the whole process of software development; documentation, implementation, testing, etc.
