I'm a British citizen (as has been my entire family for generations), and I can't wait to leave. Yeah, you did read that. I can't wait to leave and go to somewhere that may even slightly represent human progress. This country is still living in Victorian times. The obsession with the monarchy, the pathetic 'moralistic' inclinations of Middle Englanders (i.e. bigotry, backwardness, and intolerance), the pervasive obsession with WWII and Empire, Cameron's porn filters, the absurd drug laws, the fact that pubs are essentially forced to close before midnight (compare to the rest of Europe), the fact that the London Underground closes at midnight, the democratic deficit in government, the fact that the world seems to come to a standstill just because it's a Sunday (wah, tradition!). Ultimately, I refuse to allow my extortionate taxes to be spent on maintaining this ridiculous state of affairs. Sadly, I'm being forced to want to leave the country of my birth because of it. Why is Britain such a backward country?

I don't know about you, but I've been able to do pretty much anything I want to do on a Sunday, and have been since the mid-1990s. Even buses run reasonably frequently on a Sunday where I live.

But what's wrong with having one day a week that is a time for relaxing, spending time with family? Perhaps because everything is so rush rush, and there's so much daily pressure and stress, we have the rates of mental illness that we have?

Yeah the Sunday thing really annoys me. I want to do stuff, open up shops

As mentioned in my last post, I can think of few shops where I live that are closed on a Sunday now. Even the local supermarket, in a small town, only shuts one day a year (Christmas Day).

But people that work Sundays get a day off in the week?

Yes, when family are working or at school.

But why should the state dictate that the day be Sunday? If i'm single, skint and have visited family on a weekday evening then Sunday being a rest day is useless to me.

The grass is always greener...

I'm sure there are nicer countries to live in, but everywhere has it's pros and cons. Chances are wherever you go there will be at least one thing that's better here.

Good bye and good luck finding your mythical new home country. I for one won't be sad to see you, or your kind leave at the first opportunity.

Please have the courage to renounce your citizenship as well as I'd hate for you to come back.

After having lived abroad, the one thing I'm amazed about is how self deprecating we are about what happens in the UK. Its a bastion of virtue and forward thinking enlightenment compared with other country's.

most of your ravings seem to be blatant b*ll*cks.

As mush as little Englanders piss me off two with their EU and immigrant obsession those seem like stupid reasons to leave, your essentially complaining because the country is too socially conservative.

For me to leave (Ireland, Canada or New York probably) it would have to be for greater economic opportunity.

Why are you sure?

Ah, the old fallacy that progression = progress. A favourite of lefties everywhere. Who says today is better than yesterday?

Everybody who lived through yesterday once they take the rise tinted spectacles off.

I do not think you understand:

You said you were sure it is worse than the UK by a 100 fold. Why were you sure? what makes you so sure that britain is 100 times better than whatever other country he could have said?

Imagine he said Norway? Sweden? denmark? germany? you would have looked like a moron then... Britain is awesome but not 100 times better than any country. Heck it is not even that much better than the US.

Does the state dictate that day should be Sunday? Successive governments have made significant steps over the last 20 years to make a Sunday as much of a normal day as possible. Sunday shop opening hours were reformed in, what, 1994 if I remember correctly? I rermember that, but it's before a good number of people on this site were even born.

Bus services may be less frequent on a Sunday (but still frequent enough, where I live) but the state has little to no control over private bus companies. This is the result of bus companies having a relatively limited pot of money to provide services, and find there isn't enough demand for Sunday services.

Ultimately shop workers themselves should have a say in whether they open on a Sunday, and for how long. Most shopworkers I know are against Sunday opening hours, or at least extending hours further.

The Sunday thing works because it helps us rest just before the working week starts on Monday.Sunday is usually a day off in my family when my mam never usually goes out and I have my bath on a Sunday.

A lot of us like a lot of the things you're complaining about. What makes you think the majority of the population should have to change their opinions and lifestyles just for your benefit? You sound a lot more bigoted and intolerant than most Britons I've come across.

I can't give you a thumbs up. So I'll tell you you deserve one.

Agreed. My main pet peeves:
* obsession with the monarchy. How is this institution tolerated in a supposedly liberal and democratic society?
* anti-immigration stances
* I didn't like the concept of the Empire and despite popular belief the UK was not the best country on earth because of it
* elements of the culture, e.g. sayings like "very British" piss me off and thinking "our" sense of humour is the best, when everyone has different ones and one sense of humour does not represent every Briton

I still think many parts of British society are stuck in the Victorian era- attitudes to the poor, promiscuous women, children etc.

Little Englander, middle England, pretentious etc.

Progress may have been made but its still not enough, i can't pop to Tesco at 9pm for a weekly shop.

Why should employees have a say? They are employed to work a set number of hours, if these hours happen to be on a Sunday then they should work.

I just don't see why the state should regulate opening hours at all.
