Did anyone do Language and Technology?
The question was on twitter- I found the question to actually be quite nice!
Obviously, because twitter is a relatively 'new' social media site, I think we were the guinea pig year to see how a 'new' technology would fair amongst students- because, of course, if you dont have twitter- you wouldn't have any background information on the medium of technology, and also because we had never studied twitter in my lessons.

I found categorising 'alright'. I only made two groupings- The first being Spoken Language, and the second for the purpose 'To inform', but with sub groups amongst the second grouping that some were to entertain/ advertise as well.

What the heck was text G about. I just sat there staring at it for a long time waiting for something to click. However, i loved text B about the jokes. Because I was so high on adrenaline (nearing hysterical), I actually laughed out loud at the two jokes... Invigilators didn't find it too funny, mind.

I done technology, what a god send seeing as I'm a twitter user and the only one I revised for (a2 resit)
I did a grouping on some of the contexts all featuring conversational discourse to an extent. Noting that Text A (the commentator) was speaking alone but was communicating to an audience, i brought stuff in to it like the specialised lexis used/ the lexical field of athletics.

Second grouping i did on similar purposes, noted that some of the texts had more than one purpose for example the comic one was entertaining as well as informing/advertising.

3rd group i did on linguistic features, like use of pronouns and graphological aspects.

I hope i was making sense as most of the time i was going in to detail. Also hoping it's alright groupings.

One of my groupings was pragmatics, but found it hard putting Text G into this group, knew there was something in the meaning, but kinda didnt get the joke or whatever it was? Anyone else know?

When you resat your English Language paper the one today, did you have to re-do your coursework?

Just asking so I'm not completely lost if i get a bad grade!

No, I only resat the exam. You have the choice whether you want to resit just the coursework, just the exam or both. My teacher recommended resitting the exam because it's worth more marks.

did you mention a few theories in power? my friend said she felt she did good on the question but told me she didn't mention any theories and i mentioned loads so now i don't know if i've done okay

You're supposed to mention theory, so the fact that you've put loads in is super! As long as the theory is appropriate and relevant to your point, I can't see any problem! If anything, your friend is the one in trouble because you have to mention theory in the power section...

I said that the mention of 'splendidman' was a pragmatical reference to 'superman'.

Is two groups ok? I started my third group but couldn't finish it - the timings really annoying! I did language and technology which was a god send!
Two groups isn't enough as the mark scheme required a range of groupings.

This depends whether subgroups were explored.
anyone do language and mode? Child language acquisition?
For the grouping texts I wrote about A + C in 2 separate groups. One group was because they are multipurpose and one group due to the use of adjectives. I also wrote about the use of personal pronouns, humour and one more group which I've forgotten :frown:
For the gender question I wrote about linking women and machines, and men like sport more than emotion - Keith and Shuttleworth, Special Lexicon and Empty adjectives - Lakoff, Expertise and how men like information - Tannen and I basically linked everything to humour, understanding and attempting to sell the book. Sound good?? :/
Also, Text G? How freaking unfair was THAT?

I did 4 groupings, I did humour, to inform, mode and register. Can't say how I did on language and gender but I brought in stereotypes and compared the 'manual', 'machines' and 'tools' to male talk e.g male jargon (although men don't read instruction manuals usually), just like lakoff stated that women use domestical jargon and other lexical terms for colours etc.

Personally, I don't think Text G was that bad. Text B and D (the joke and the marriage one) were the worst in my opinion.
I did a group on the use of linguistic features to advertise and spoke about graphology and pragmatics.
The second group was of features of spoken discourse.
The third was a group on use of a specific audience, so pronouns and stuff.
But I didn't group Text B into any category and just left it and now I'm really nervous, do you think i'll lose marks :/

I didn't understand the joke from the comic to be of spiderman/batman, but did still put it in my grouping for Humour

I find it confusing as I've never read comics. I didn't understand it at all.

Haha, I hated that text as well, I only briefly talked about it, saying it used prosody to convey emotions; that superman guy looked nervous as hell :P and in the represented speech it said *GULP*, which I believe is a prosodic feature??
I grouped them in
Pronouns (the one about the bins, the detective novel and the marriage one)
Spoken Mode (the comic, the xbox transcript and the commentary)
Humour (the jokes and the bin one)
I found that alright, but I ddin't get the comic so that confused me a bit

I did gender for section B and I just stereotyped loads, like about how men don't care about their appearance and women do, the thing about Barbie, the difference theory(?) in how men prefer football, etc. I felt like I was repeating myself a lot though, which was really annoying

I'll second that, do AQA really think I'm going to spend 3 minutes trying to find the joke.... I understood that one where the guy asked for a beer with tarmac on his arm and then said "oh and one for the road", but the one about only doing splits on a Tuesday!?....

Anyhow, that marriage one was also dreadful............. All I said about that was that it was monologic and prepared lol...
