Murano Vs. Cairncross

Hiya!

Just accepted my unconditional offer from Glasgow uni, and I've got so excited I've started looking at accommodation. The ones that stand out to me are the Murano Large flats and Cairncross.

I started at the University of Leeds in Sept 2014, and I stayed in a tiny flat with 4 other people, due to there being separate flats it was hard to socialise with other people in the block when there wasn't a flat party on upstairs- this is one of the main reasons I like the idea of being in a large murano flat or in cairncross, as hopefully there will be more people like myself who like to go out and party rather than my last flat who just wanted to sit in every night D: (I didn't leave because of my flat mates, I left because I hated the course I was studying- my flatmates were nice just we were very different)

I'm going to try to have a look around them on the visit day in march, but I also want to hear things from past students who have stayed there to help me make my decision.

You're in exactly the same position as me, I started in Leeds in 2014 and dropped out to reapply to Glasgow! Although I don't have any info about accommodation I would be curious to find out more as I really want to make the right decision this time around :smile:

Oh hey! Even though I'm incredibly excited to start at Glasgow I am a bit hesitant still seeing as I thought everything would go swimmingly when I started at leeds! What subject were you studying at Leeds may I ask? Leeds were hopeless lmao! X

I was studying biotechnology and enterprise at Leeds btw :smile:

I'm an English student but I'm excited to live in Scotland for a few years :smile:

Hey, I just accepted my offer for Glasgow last night, I can't wait!

I went to the applicants day yesterday and, as I wanted to check it was still my preferred choice, I went on the bus tour to Morano student village. It seems like a great atmosphere- a bit scruffy but in a great location and so cool that you would be living with so many other students!

I have a few friends that went to Morano who all said that it was the best year of their life- as its soo sociable. I asked a few of the reps yesterday about Morano and the reaction was that it was grotty but brilliant fun, and those that didn't go said they wish they had and spent a lot of money on taxi's getting to Morano for all the parties!

Have you made a decision yet about which halls to go for? :smile:

I would recommend Murano over Ciarncross, 100%. Purely because the majority of students live in Murano, and its just more sociable and easier. I live there currently, and while I've met a few people from Firhill and other, more expensive halls, I've not met one person from Cairncross. Its also situated on the other side of uni from all the other halls, which is just annoying if you make friends with anyone who lives in any of the other halls.

Murano is not the best - but none of them are - and you are definitely right about going for a large flat rather than a small flat - the small flats get neglected by the staff and they are just way more quiet and awkward.

I've just applied for accommodation, and I put a large cairncross flat as my first choice but now I'm feeling a bit iffy about my decision after reading this D: I like how cairncross has long corridors so I can meet more people in my halls, but if Murano is more sociable I might change my accommodation choices as I don't want to miss out on first year freshers fun. Also, I get a sofa in my room at cairncross and it's closer to uni (As I'm worried if I have 9am lectures I might just be like "nah **** it" and not turn up if I live a 40min walk away- well after a night out anyway) Does the walk from Murano to uni take quite a while?
Yeah, I definitely want a proper student flat- with sick stains on the walls and sociable flat mates, I had a look around Queen Margarets and it was dead which is my nightmare.

I've put a large room at Cairncross as my first choice but not I'm wondering as to whether I should change it to Murano hmmmm :/

Haha no look - do not worry too much - Cairncross does sound really nice - I just don't have any experience with it! Everywhere's sociable really just that Murano is huge thats all. It is always who you are with anyway - I know people who ended up with a small flat in Murano with people they don't have anything in common with and don't have the best time - but it really doesn't matter that much - you'll find people either way and those are the people you'll have fun with. Im closer with people outside of my flat now anyway! Cairncross is a bit closer and you can walk through the park which is nice as well. The Murano walk is kind of long but you learn loads of shortcuts and i reckon it now takes me about 15 mins to get to uni - but theres also a mini bus that runs throughout the day to all the accommodations and its really convenient and it runs till 11pm which is great coz then you don't have to walk into uni if you're going out which is safer. (this applies to Cairncross as well!!)
The best thing to do is find a few societies and get really involved with at least 1, thats the best way to find people you get on with in my experience.

But basically - do not fret too much its not the end of the world wherever you end up. And yeah Queen M really isn't worth the extra money!!
