Chromatin -biology

i dont understand what chromatin is ...i know that it stores the dna and protein when the cell is inactive and not dividing but why is the protein there..also it is mentioned in my textbook that histones are used in supercoiling of dna and it is the same protein in chromatin .. but when the dna is inactive why does it need histones .. i'm so confused
