You're right Gob but Italian viewers' main issue with him is that he's not cerebral. A fancy box of tricks with a great goal in him, but not a dictator. I'm not sure that footballing intelligence is something you can learn so much; the likes of Marchisio have to an extent, but it's not all too common. I think you could justifiably say that players like Frank Lampard never did. In Italy they value midfielders differently to how they do here, but inconsistency isn't the only flaw in his game, and that his game and potential could well be limited down the line. I say that as a big fan of his, and none of this has anything to do with how his first few games at United have gone. His reputation far outweighs his current ability as a midfielder.
