Why are people saying Labour has won?

Corbyn is not PM. Labour cannot even with SNP, Lib Dem and Green create a sufficient majority.

Why all this rhetoric that Labour has won when pragmatically Labour has zilch power as a government or majority party?

They did well to increase their seats but to win an election means to become the party capable of gaining a majority of seats in Parliament.

They havent won in the strictest sense, but they have won a moral victory by avoiding being absolutely wiped out as everyone thought when the opinion polls started. people were talking of a 200 cons majority. It backfired on May and now she is beholden to the DUP.
Because Labour made gains in this election against all the odds, significantly increasing their share of the vote and taking a number of new seats. Theresa May lost her majority and is weaker because of this, and Labour is in a good position to face the next election, whenever that may be. That certainly counts as a victory, even if they didn't actually win the election.

It's all BS sound bites and rhetoric I'm afraid and frankly no-one but the most deluded are fooled by it.

LABOUR LOST

Plain and simple. They failed to put up a credible leader and offered a manifesto of vapourware promises for which there is no money to pay for it.

Labour could only rouse 261 seats wheras the Conservatives got 318 seats

CONSERVATIVES WON

Absolutely totally, unequivocally. Most seats, most votes.

There are no prizes here for coming second I'm afraid. Pat yourselves on the back all you like but the harsh reality is Labour lost.

Then factor in the key element that Labour effectively prostituted themselves by "buying" the young vote. The swings in various seats were due in the main to young people believing the vapourware promise of free tuition fees. This situation totally skews the picture. These voters in the main don't give one fig about politics, about Labour, about the main issues facing the country. They got off their arses, registered to vote and ticked the Labour box purely because Labour offered them free tuition fees.

Without that singular and most shameful move by Corbyn, Labour WOULD have suffered a much bigger defeat as was predicted all along.

For Labour now to be claiming the moral victory is pathetic in the extreme. By stubbornly refusing to stand down over the past year Corbyn has failed his party, ensured they would lose the election and failed the country too.

Stop deluding yourselves that Labour somehow won here. They didn't, they lost.
The Labour MPs don't suddenly all love Corbyn. They are all biting their tongues and thinking about their futures. They know that the 261 seats were the result of shamelessly buying the young vote. They still believe Corbyn is a shambles and they are still right about that.

Unfortunately what is done is done. The young have foolishly fallen for Labour's con trick, the promise of "free stuff" that they could never deliver. They were used, plain and simple to make Labour look more popular than it is. What that has done Is damaged our BrExit position and forced May to get into bed with the DUP of all parties ! Nice going !

No hard Brexit will now likely mean a single market, still ruled by ECJ and probably also means free movement, so immigration will not be reduced at all from the EU. Great, best get strapped in for more terrorist incidents !
I guess this also means we will have to pay the Brexit Bill too.

Basically it's the very worst of all BrExit scenarios.

Yep pat yourselves on the back people. You made yourselves heard, "you're the man" you really are. Long live the revolution ! Muppets !

Your future prospects just went down the pan, and you did it to yourselves. BrExit will cost the UK billions which WILL impact YOU in many aspects of your lives. And all because you fell for Corbyn's promise of free tuition fees !

Totally Epic Fail.

I think that the most accurate answer to the question is that Labour had an almost perfect outcome!

Corbyn needed to get enough seats to encourage the youth vote that it should vote again next time and to show that they didn't waste their time voting for them.

But anyone who understands anything about the situation this country finds itself in -I won't bore you with the details but dealing with an increasingly elderly and unhealthy population while increasing an already huge national debt is the main problem-will likely realise that if Corbyn gets into power and carries out his policies it would probably take 10 years to recover from the damage.

(As it happens I wanted Labour to do well but I hate the whole system. I despise the two main parties and all those who like sheep vote for them.)

So if Labour gets into power we would have a situation that while students would clearly be better off because of the 11 billion spent on student fees which this country clearly can't afford it would be those young people who can't get to university who suffer.

But that's just a minor thing.

The point is after 5 years of `Corbyn even the dumbest young person will start to realise that money comes from somewhere. And if you take too much of it from people and businesses many of those people and businesses will leave.

And so the main purpose of Labour is to prevent the Tories from gaining majorities thus making many people happy and also making the `Tories .......and this is the real point.....
Making the Tories abandon the kind of sensible policies that May was trying to bring in and instead doing the very same thing Labour is doing.

The Tories will now effectively bribe its own voters -and some potential Labour voters- and so we will now have the two main parties coming up with policies the country simply cannot afford .

It's sheer madness.

But it will be future generations that will ultimately have to pick up the bill.

Would Attlee, Wilson or Blair have been satisfied with this performance?

Once again ignoring the relative positions they were in.
The Cons called the election because they believed they were going to wipe out Labour, when in fact they got a bloody nose and have to rely on the DUP to prop them up.

They didnt have to call the election and it all backfired on them.
Poor campaign and leadership by T May. She is in a worse position than when she decided to cal the election.

You keep berating the young in your posts because they didnt vote how you wanted them to or because they had the temerity to vote at all. You do realise this is a student forum. Are you actually a student?.

If so you might appreciate that the choice of having £30,000 worth of debt or not looms large in the thoughs of anyone considering Uni. It wasnt that long ago since it was a £9,000 decision and a lot of the MPs went to uni for free.

Just because you wnat hard brexit doesnt mean everyone else does.

That has done the nation a favour. It isn't a coincidence that May'a manifesto went on and on about inter-generational conflict. Every party will now have to address them as in the past they have ignored them.

Conservatives won the most seats, but managed to lose seats and their parliamentary majority. Put whatever positive spin on that you want, but they went from a 20 point lead and predicted landslide to this. Labour made gains and exceeded pretty much everyone's expectations.

You really think tuition fees alone is enough to cause the surge in youth turnout which appears to have taken place here? Remember youth turnout has been consistently low in recent times; it takes more than one policy to reverse a trend like that.

Theresa May calling a snap election and then running a terrible campaign is what damaged our position in the Brexit negotiations (which could be underway by now if not for her constant delays), not Corbyn voters. The rest of the EU have now seen just how weak and unstable May actually is. None of them have looked at her campaign and thought "wow, she's a really formiddable opponent, we need to drastically change our approach".
I think they are saying it for their constituency
Labour didn't win, but they avoided catastrophic defeat which is pretty much what everyone expected from this election, including Theresa May.
The fact that they managed to win so many seats, and cause the conservatives to lose 19, while gaining 36 is a victory for the labour party.
Labour didn't win the election though so better luck next time

That's exactly what I think. While I don't agree with all the policies of Conservatives, how would Jeremy Corbyn afford for our country to reduce tuition fees from over 9000 a year to 0? Yeah increase the taxes but it still will not be affordable given all his other policies such as getting the grants back, making adult education free like the courses etc.

Where would Labour even be if they didn't promise free tuition fees this election though?
Whilst it would be amazing to have over £9000 worth of tuition fees a year reduced to £0, by the time I to University, sadly it is simply not affordable due to Brexit and it would make our country be further into debt. Would Corbyn actually have done it though? No ideas. However, I think tuition fees should be reduced. Conservatives are here saying it will rise with inflation and Labour say they will be £0. Student grants should be brought back too as it lessens the burden significantly
They don't mean the election obviously but because may failed and underestimated them.
Labour didn't win, of course. But increasing their vote share and the Tories decreasing theirs is evidence that the public want more of a mix of Labour and Tory policies, which ought to be taken into account when negotiating Brexit as it will last far longer than the next Parliament (if it even lasts the maximum 5 years).
They didn't "win" the election, but given the state of the Labour Party 7 weeks ago and the result now is astonishing. They went from possible annihilation to increasing their vote share and seats, to cause a hung parliament. They have done very well. They won Canterbury and Kensington ffs... That's a HUGE achievement.
I don't care what anyone says. DUP have won the election and labour have done well. The conservatives lost the election.
