ANIMATION uni in UK !!! HELP !!! what should I choose!?

Hey there!!
Recently I have been searching for animation courses in the uk but I'm quite confused with which school might be the best for what I want to study.
I read some articles from students giving their opinion about some courses but yeah... each person has a different perspective according to what they like most and want to do most.
I would like to hear only animation students opinions for this matter ><
I want to study basically everything. The principles of animation, 2D animation and stop motion, how the storytelling works, drawing, the light, the sound etc. I want to be able to learn a bit of everything from classical animation to its modern 3D aspects. Not just specialise in 1 thing you know.
But !!! Even though I want to learn a bit of everything, I want to learn more about the 3D part and work mostly on the computer because the 3D animation market is the future (more than the other types of animation).

So !! 3D animation is what I want most but !! I want to learn a bit of everything because I really want to be able of doing a bit of every type of animation.

Help pleaseeeeeee!!!! @-@ any university good for this !?? ;_;

Hi! I'm a lot like you. I already have experience in 3D animation, and while I want to learn about things like 2D and stop motion as well as the theory stuff, that's really my main focus and what I'd like to end up working on after uni. I'm starting at Nottingham Trent as I felt their course was really well rounded. A number of other universities focussed a bit too much on 2D animation for my liking, like Salford

Thank you for your reply
I already saw in Hertfordshire, Anglia Ruskin, De Monford Uni., Bournemouth and others. I am currently interested in Middlesex Uni.
They have a 3D animation & Games BA and an Animation BA. The last one is more guided towards 2D animation, stop motion and some CGI in 2D and 3D but it doesn't seem to have as much 3D as I would like to :/
I just took a look at the course and It really amazed me :O
What's your personal opinion about the course and school so far? Was it difficult to have all the requirements to apply? And do you feel like you could study at the same time you work ?

Thank you so much !!!!!

Hello Iris,

You may want to check out Ravensbourne for Animation if you haven't already. We cover most of the stuff you mentioned if not all. Just click on the link to find out more.

I personally study design & coding but I know a good bit about the Animation and Motion Graphic courses here, as I have a bunch of friends that do it, and I did some stuff related to it too, such as life drawing classes which are a part of the Animation course. A lot of the students that do work on both these courses often utilize Mia, Cinema 4D and after effects to achieve their goals, but it doesn't mean you can't use other stuff. There is a lot of freedom with what you can do for your projects once you get into second and third year, so you could learn any of those skills you mentioned as part of those projects with help from our excellent tutors, so I have heard. You would be taught by industry professionals and work closely with industry on briefs and collaborative work.

You may want to consider poping by for an open day if you want to meet the tutors in person and get a better feel for the course.

If you have any questions feel free to ask,
Michail
Hi, I'm a 2D animation 2nd year at the university of Hertfordshire. Our course ranked as the best in the UK on last year's rookies (best games art course in the world even) We have 4 pathways: 2D animation, 3D animation, Games Art and VFX.

In first year we have most classes together regardless of what pathway you're on (and you can switch pathways too if you want, a lot of people do), and then we get to specialise further in second and third year (which people from the industry seem to appreciate about our course, considering most people from other courses seem to come out of uni as generalists and then specialise while in industry, while our alumni get to already work as what they specialised in (say modeler or animator (this is mostly 3D people, as 2D generally end up working in 2D studios or as storyboard artists and similar, while 3D animation, VFX and games have more of an overlap in industry)))

We don't focus as much on stop motion, considering we're a digital animation course, but we did have a small stop motion project in first year as part of our artskills portfolio.

I am not really the best person to tell you about 3D animation (as I'm 2D myself), but I could send some of the 3Ds over here if you want.

I'm happy to hear the university has such a good environment and so many opportunities for you to explore and grow up in different ways. That is indeed a relief.
Can you give me some more information about the 3D animation & Games course? I really would like to know if the course is just 3D or if it also gives you bases and opportunities to study other types of animation becauseI would really love to study all types of animation but indeed 3D Animation is my passion so in the end I want to learn a bit of everything but more about the 3D part you see >< can you ask your friend about this matter and then tell me please ?
I can't go to the open day unfortunatly because I'm really far away from there
Thank you for your kindness and information

Yeah, I searched a lot about the Animation courses in Hertfordshire and it really amazed me
It impressed me exactly because of the shared year with the other courses and the bases they give and then when you speciallize in one thing because I do want to speciallize in a thing but I dont want to do just that thing. I want to be able to do the other things too but perhaps not as much as that one. It's relly complex, I mean what I want is complex haha.
Still, I am really amazed at that first year when you learn all the bases. That is very good.
I just got confused in one thing. You make projects in animation aside from the final project so you can learn other types of animation?
Thank you very much ! your information was really helpful

Hello,

I just had a chat with my friend and he said that you start with 2d and learn all the principles and basics of animation. You can then explore everything from Virtual Reality to 3d and 2.5D animation, environment modelling and other things.
They let you explore what you want as long as it meets the criteria

Shame you won't be able to come!
But ask me any question you might have!

Have a great day

Basically not all projects are about animation per se, we have concept art, character design, modeling, texturing, live action short film etc etc projects (that's some of the ones we had in first year at least xD), so there's a lot of different things to learn there that are useful for one's animation projects.

As for actual animation projects, in first year 2D has a few short 2D animation projects (we had one doing rotoscoping in first semester and one working in after effects in second) plus a 2D animation showreel per semester, 3D has a 3D animation class in first semester and they also do a showreel in second that basically has the same exercises as 2D did over the first and second semester, for the rest 3D spends a lot of first year learning 3D softwares as they can't work without those, so they don't spend as much time on actual animation projects until second year.

I can't really tell you much about what second year is like as I'm only starting that myself, but I know that we have a second year film that we'll do, that I think is pathway specific. I do know that in third year one can cross over pathways for one's final year project. Again, if you have more specific questions about 3D or second or third year, it might be better if I ask one of the 3Ds/one of the 3rd years or alumni to tell you more about that

Hello !!!
Thank you for your reply once again !!
Yeah I read about all the course contents and they really amazed me  and that project thing seems so exiting though
I like that thing of learning about other things besides 2D or 3D as I said, everything is important in my opinion
I will gather all the information I get so in the end I can choose between what it's the best.
Thank you so much for your clarification about the course x3 It really helped me have a more cristal clear notion about the work you do
I wish you all the luck and happiness for your second year ^-^

Have you decided yet? in the same spot as you :/
If you are Interested Bucks New University has a 3D animation Course. Im on it now in my third year and I was offered a Job midway through my second year by deltatre which was cool. We competed against other universities including Hertfordshire in the grads in games competition, for the first time ever last year in the rising star category, and my friend won First place in the animation category against all the other universities. Our Course is still really new (the one im on is 3 years old and began when I started as we got a new course leader). All of our tutors are industry lecturers who still work in the industry while teaching. The animation Tutor is Sydney Padua (look her up on google) who wrote the graphic novel 'the thrilling adventures of Lovelace and Babbage' and has worked on features from 'The Iron Giant' to the live action Disney 'Junglebook' She has just been working on the new live action lion king film. We are a very new course so we have don't have as many claims to fame as Hertfordshire do (they are good university so still look at them) But we do have great things at Bucks New Uni Such as our student union is completely free, has a bar and a club with super cheap drinks and there is no membership fee or entry fee. They also fund the societies (which are free to attend) and pay for our equipment and stuff. They offer lots of free trips to places and hold tonnes of events all year round. We have almost every software an animator could want and we have a thing called the Big Deal and The Big Deal on Course. the big deal on course means we are given a laptop or cintiq completely free and we also get money to spend for things on John Smiths website. in second and third year i got £325 pounds to spend on what I wanted which was pretty cool. In terms of student experience I took a chance (I got offers from Hertfordshire and Bournemouth too) and went with Bucks because of the tutors and how fast our course is rising in the ranks and it was worth it.
Hi there Iris,

Hope you don't mind the post and best of luck, if you wanted to move to the South, there is a course in Bournemouth,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpQp6pIotJM

Wherever you choose, keep work handy for a reel and check out the job prospects and range of units covered, most will be listed on the course UCAS page - this sometimes givfes an idea of the amount of project or taught units that are delivered. If you want to work in an area, make sure that you know how successful the course has been in terms of relevant job opportunities following the course.

Best of luck,

Alex

Check out the Rookies. They've got a 'Top ten 3D Animation Schools in Europe"

The UK ones in that Top 10 Europe list are Bournmouth Uni, Uni of South Wales, and Uni of Herfordshire.
