St. Andrews Application Process

How long does it take for the status to go from 'checking application' to 'pending decision'?

P.S. - I am applying for International Relations as an international student, if that helps.

No one can predict this. You will just have to wait and keep checking.

The wait is agonizing! Thank you for your reply.

wow i was about to say i've never met someone with your background, but i was telling people that the benefit of St Andrews over Durham is its internationalism, and you're the sort of person i had in mind so I hope you get in!

IR is probably St Andrews' most competitive degree though, so good luck

I'm from London and I graduated a few months ago

Sorry for the late response, but thank you that is so sweet of you. I have just received a response from St. Andrews and got offers from all 5 unis which I am ecstatic about! I have applied to Durham as well, but I definitely prefer the sound of the course and the environment St. Andrews has to offer.

Would you mind if I ask what was the hardest aspect of attending St. Andrews University?

Congratulations on your graduation by the way!

Hiya, congrats on your offer, really happy for you. What other unis did you apply for? I had to choose between St Andrews, Durham, Warwick and Bath. Also what course have you chosen?

Hardest aspect... I've tried hard to think of an answer but I've got nowhere. Is there anything more specific you'd like to know about St Andrews??
Thank you! I have also applied to Durham, Exeter, Lancaster and Sussex. I’ve chosen to study Internal Relations.

To what extent did accommodation affect your overall experience at St. Andrews? I’ve heard some very varying responses.

ah ok accommodation

St Salvator's, McIntosh & Uni Hall = you get a classic, posh halls experience. Pricey/expensive but a really good experience (i stayed in two of these)

Andrew Melville Hall = much cheaper and a really fun, social experience, but without the poshness. (i stayed here)

DRA/Fife Park = the most expensive but really cool, modern flat-style halls - under floorboard heating, big kitchens with sofas for parties etc. it's a 15 min walk into town which isn't nice if you don't like walking, but it great if you do (or want to cycle) (i stayed here for two weeks)

Agnes Blackadder = the only hall i wouldn't have been happy in. it's pricey and self-catered corridor-style halls so it lacks the social aspect. If I was put into AB hall i would have asked to transfer to DRA even though DRA is even more expensive

Albany Park = really, really cheap and by the coast. quirky too - see https://www.facebook.com/stmemedrews/posts/1765141073538538

i actually edited my post to indicate where I stayed but you were too quick!

i mentioned that i stayed in St Salvator's, Uni Hall, Andrew Melville Hall and DRA (for a couple of weeks) and i had an absolutely amazing time in all of them, especially the much maligned DRA which i wouldn't have been able to afford to pay for a whole year.

i couldn't recommend them enough but all have pros and cons (mainly the price)

I wouldn't have been happy if i'd been in Agnes Blackadder Hall though

Oh haha sorry! That is so nice to hear, happy that you have had such a great experience.

How about socialising? Did you find any difficulties with that? (Sorry to bombard you with so many questions 😅)

no worries, i'm here specifically to answer questions  . Socialising is actually a lot easier at St Andrews because there are no nightclubs (except the Union or going to Dundee) so drinking revolves around society events such as the Harry Potter & Gin society social or the Politics society evening, where it's easier to meet people than at a club.

However, i made the classic mistake in my first year. during Freshers week I signed up to all the societies I liked the sound of. But throughout the year I was too lazy to attend their events. So if you want to have a good time in st andrews you have to make the effort to join societies and participate in them or at least attend their events
