Can I apply to an art or fashion course in uni with Level 2 UAL diploma?

Hi there!

Great to see your interest in the arts. The lowest entry level for most undergraduate fashion / textiles courses is usually a level 3. It is advisable that you acquire a higher level of diplomacy before you apply for an undergraduate course.

At UAL , Applicants who do not meet the course entry requirements ( for fashion / textiles (this is generally a combination of Level 2 + level 3 + level 4 course ) may still be considered . However, this is only if the course team feel that an applicant's work is of an extraordinary quality considering they did not obtain a level 3 diploma at the least or find other strong academic or professional reference of that applicant.



Assuming that your highest level of qualification is a Level 2, this exception is probably not applicable to you.



I would advise that you obtain at the very least a level 3 diploma relevant to art / design before you consider applying for an undergraduate course at university.



Once you've obtained your level 3 diploma, definitely look into a foundation degree course. A foundation degree is a level 4 diploma and often also an entry requirement for Fashion / Textiles courses. I would recommend looking into the foundation Diploma in art and design: curriculum area: fashion & textiles at UAL Central Saint Martin's for that.

A Foundation Degree is NOT a level 4 diploma.

And FdA is a 2 year HE course equivalent to an HND, 2 years of a degree or level 5.

A Foundation Diploma is a 1 year level 3 or 4 FE course.

The two are very different types of course with completely different final qualifications and funding

Overview
The University of the Arts London Awarding Body Level 4 Diploma in Art & Design - Foundation Studies is a pivotal qualification which supports students in the transition from general education to specialist art and design education, enabling them to make an informed decision when applying to art and design higher education, or seeking employment within a related industry.

The majority of learners completing the Level 4 Diploma in Foundation Studies –Art & Design will progress into higher education, with some progressing into employment or apprenticeships.
UCAS doesn’t recognize qualifications at Level 4, so unlike its Level 3 counterpart, the Level 4 Diploma in Foundation Studies – Art & Design doesn’t attract UCAS points. Nonetheless, it is still recognized and accepted by universities across the UK. Many universities who also deliver this qualification offer the Level 4 version, including the University of the Arts London, and therefore obviously also recruit students from it.
The qualification will prepare students for a wide range of undergraduate courses in art, design and related subjects.
