You can apply but unless you're a mature student or have other level 3 qualifications then you're unlikely to get a place at anywhere good or with your best interests in mind. Level 2 is GCSE equivalent - jumping from level 2 to level 4 (first year of a degree) is a huge step

Thank you, I didn't know.
Hey there,

If I were you I would look into pre-degree courses such as Extended Diplomas, which are the equivalent to 3 A-Levels. The ED courses we offer at Plymouth College of Art are Level 3 courses, they are for students 16+ and are accredited by UAL. We currently offer 5 different Art and Design courses, which I have linked for you below. The Fashion and Textiles course may interest you!

UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design
UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Fashion & Textiles)
UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Film, Animation & Media Production)
UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Graphics, Illustration & Game Arts)
UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design (Photography)

Hope this helps and gives you an idea of more of options that you have!

Hi there!

Great to see your interest in the arts. The lowest entry level for most undergraduate fashion / textiles courses is usually a level 3. It is advisable that you acquire a higher level of diplomacy before you apply for an undergraduate course.

At UAL , Applicants who do not meet the course entry requirements ( for fashion / textiles (this is generally a combination of Level 2 + level 3 + level 4 course ) may still be considered . However, this is only if the course team feel that an applicant's work is of an extraordinary quality considering they did not obtain a level 3 diploma at the least or find other strong academic or professional reference of that applicant.

Assuming that your highest level of qualification is a Level 2, this exception is probably not applicable to you.

I would advise that you obtain at the very least a level 3 diploma relevant to art / design before you consider applying for an undergraduate course at university.

Once you've obtained your level 3 diploma, definitely look into a foundation degree course. A foundation degree is a level 4 diploma and often also an entry requirement for Fashion / Textiles courses. I would recommend looking into the foundation Diploma in art and design: curriculum area: fashion & textiles at UAL Central Saint Martin's for that.

A Foundation Degree is NOT a level 4 diploma.

And FdA is a 2 year HE course equivalent to an HND, 2 years of a degree or level 5.

A Foundation Diploma is a 1 year level 3 or 4 FE course.

The two are very different types of course with completely different final qualifications and funding

Hi there ,

The information provided below is a snippet of what is available online via our official UAL website regarding the foundation programme .

Start.
UAL Level 4 Diploma in Foundation Studies Art & Design (500/3360/8)

Overview
The University of the Arts London Awarding Body Level 4 Diploma in Art & Design - Foundation Studies is a pivotal qualification which supports students in the transition from general education to specialist art and design education, enabling them to make an informed decision when applying to art and design higher education, or seeking employment within a related industry.

Hi ,

I have reviewed my previous response to the original thread question and realise where the confusion might have come from , the term ‘degree’ was used instead of diploma . The type of Foundation course I was referring to is indeed a Level 4 Diploma In Foundation studies course !

After obtaining your level 3 , definitely look into this !

Thanks
