Hi warmpancakes,

I ended up picking Royal Holloway for Media Arts because I knew it would give me the opportunity to explore a range of roles within Media Arts. Throughout your three years you are honing your skills down to find what it is you’d like to specialise in. This is great because it gives you the time to learn where your strengths and passions are, and even if you don’t go on to take a specific course, you’re still surrounded by equipment and talented people from around the world so you can pursue those things in your free time. I specialised in Producing for Film and Television for my final year but still love writing and directing!

I chose to study Media Arts because I felt like it taught you not only the analytical skills required for research, approaching problems with a creative mind-set, and great team working skills (all very good things on your CV), but also because it taught you practical skills.

I recommend that you take the time to go through the different modules, course structures etc for the courses you are interested in and try to think about what might suit you best. Things like facilities, career opportunities, and location are all things that I also considered when picking the right course, because these are the things which will shape your job prospects upon graduation.

I was looking at other courses a while ago now, but when I was looking I really struggled to find something with the right theory/practical split. One thing I liked about Royal Holloway's course was that the theory backed up the practical elements for example a theory module I did on British Cinema helped to shape my thoughts about the films I wanted to make and how they related to the British industry.

One thing that stood out about Royal Holloway for me was the continuous support for making your own films. The fact that I was able to take out equipment, book spaces, ask for advice, whenever I wanted and enter the edit labs 24/7 made it so much easier for me to make films outside of my course, whereas a lot of other courses I looked at didn't offer that flexibility (and the extra-curricular stuff is really where you explore what kind of filmmaker you want to be).

Finally, the thing that swung Royal Holloway for me over other places was the location. Being on a campus made getting out and making my own stuff so much more achievable than being in a city, but we still had access to London (including the rooms we have in Bedford Square/ Senate House which were ideal for holding auditions with London based actors).
