AS Psychology 9990 tips - I got an A

Hey everyone,

In May of 2019 I took the AS Level Cambridge Psychology 9990 exam as a private candidate and managed to get an A. I then took my A2 exams in November 2019 and received an A*.

It was not easy for me and that is why I decided to write a blog post about how I did it in detail and include a lot of tips that could help anyone of you taking the exam.

I only started studying in January and then took the exam in May, so it is definitely doable in that time frame. However, if you can start now and space out your repetition, I'm sure you can do even better than I did

The most efficient way to revise depends heavily on the type of learner that you are. I'm a visual/kinesthetic learner so the best way for me was to read the textbook and original studies, make notes from them, rewrite my notes at regular intervals based on memory and then check my original notes to see what information I had forgotten and focused on that, as well as using flashcards for some of it.

No problem

I'm doing CIE (Cambridge) But most of the tips I have included can be applied to other boards as well as some other subjects.

Hi  I just did my A2 exams and I will be getting my results in January so I won't know how well my study methods worked for A2 until I receive my results. However, I can tell you for sure that active recall is the best way to study for psychology, especially because there is so much to remember.

Hey! Yeah you can check out more tips here: https://psychology9990.wordpress.com/
In my opinion, there is A LOT to remember for A2 psych so doing AS & A2 psych together, while not impossible, is quite a big challenge. I think the AS papers are earlier than the A2 ones so you could always study both and then when it gets closer to the AS exams, focus on that but also do light active recall for A2 syllabus.

congrats on the grade! 😁The posts on ur blog are all from reliable sources or mostly from the book? Are these the ones u used for the exams ? I wanted to know wht questions did u make essay plans on? Did u memorize the answers to evaluation questions for the study or just the points like Aims Background etc? Can u share those notes or essay plans if possible or email them to me if u can? That would be really helpful , also can u give tips on how u managed ur time during the A2 pprs as there are lots of questions but not enough time i have noticed ? And is using the original studies important or is the book enough for the A*? I had a d in Aslevel but not sure what i did wrong 😣😣 as i had memorized from the book too and made mind maps etc any tips on bringing the grade up?

Thank you so much
1. The posts from my blog are basically everything that I did that helped me receive the A*. Notes for AS I made using the original studies. For A2, I made notes from a reference book because the information you need to know is not as extensive as that in AS.

2. For AS, I made essay plans for every study for the last question in Paper 1 on the strength and weaknesses. For A2, I made essay plans for Paper 3's Evaluate question that is worth 10 marks.

3. I don't understand what you mean by "Did u memorize the answers to evaluation questions for the study or just the points like Aims Background etc?" because aim, background etc is for the describe question so I'll answer both. For the describe question, you will need to memorize it because it's all facts. For the evaluation question, you can just memorize the points like "ethics, which study, why" and then expand while you are writing in the exam.

4. Unfortunately, right now I do not have my essay plans with me. However, you can give me your email and if I find some then I can send them to you.

5. For time management, I have written in my blog posts on how much time I suggest spending on each section but I'll summarize it here. For Paper 1, you only need about 10-15 minutes to answer the strength and weakness question so the rest of the time can be used for the rest of the papers. For Paper 2, I would suggest the same, leaving 10-15 minutes for section C. For Paper 3, I'd suggest 45 minutes per specialist option, so about 15 minutes for the first question, and the for the second question about 12 minutes in part (a) and 18 minutes in part (b). For Paper 4, I would suggest spending 40 minutes in Section A (20 minutes for each question), 25 minutes in Section B (15 minutes for part (a) and 10 minutes for part (b)) and 20 minutes for Section C.

6. As I mentioned earlier, I used the original studies for AS but only the book for A2. I don't think you need the original studies to do well in the exam. However, there will always be some information in the original study that is not in the book and that they could ask you about in the exam because the exam questions are made using the original studies and not the book. If all of the questions that come out in the exam are the ones that were in your book then you're lucky I guess.

7. I wrote this in my AS Psychology tips that were the main reason that I did well "Something I have done that has helped me tremendously is to use active recall for each study. I do this by first making a list of all the things I need to know about a study in order. For example, study name, researcher, aim, participants, independent variable, dependent variable etc.

And then, I choose a study and fill in the information of that study without looking at my notes. Once I am done, I refer back to my notes to see if I have missed anything out. This way I am able to test what I remember about a study and recognize what information I have not retained." On top of that, when you do past year questions, memorize the answers given in the mark scheme. You could be right but sometimes they only accept the answers they provide.
