Midwife to Adult Nurse

Okay so I’ve decided to return to university and enter the NHS after graduation (hopefully)! I’m wanting to be a midwife but I’m also interested in nursing. My plan was to do Adult Nursing and then progress onto midwifery after gaining experience. However, I would prefer to do my midwifery first as I feel that is the area I would most enjoy. I don’t want to limit myself by doing it and can’t find anything online about options available for midwifes becoming nurses. Is there a fast-track course such as there is from nursing to midwifery (18mnths) or would I have to study a 3 year degree again?

In short- can I go from being a midwife to an Adult Nurse just as easy as Adult Nurses can transition to midwifes?

Any help would be appreciated hugely!

The only logical thing I can think of - and find, for that matter - is the 2 year MNurs where you already need to have 600 hours of theory, 600 of placement and (sometimes) a related degree.

As far as I am aware of you can't go from midwifing to adult nursing after qualifying as a midwife, I spoken to a senior staff member on this and was told that best and only way is going down adult nursing route first and then if the 20 months shortened top-up course available at the chosen university & hospital trust then need to wait till you at least gained nearly two years experience as a nurse and then ask the hospital trust management if you can do this short top-up course as otherwise you'll be a midwife only as they must authorise this as you can't just do this without permission from them.

Unfortunately that's what i wanted to do but adult nurse first then eventually do the midwife top-up course but I landed up doing midwifing first and I'm stuck unless I'm willing to go back to university as a student nurse again to become a adult nurse which I'm not as I would still be stuck with one choice although a dual degree. And bear in mind Paige that if you where to go down the adult nursing route eventually is that your midwifing registration with NMC will be suspended untill you complete the adult nursing course as will be classed again as a student nurse and you can't work as a midwife & vice versa going from adult nurse to midwife via the 20 months top-up course but can reapply for your midwife registration again in last few months of the course.

Yes Paige you wont find anything online regarding this matter as I said above you can't go from midwifing to adult nursing okay and that's came from my ward manager & sister on this .

Is it worth the grief and hassle for not achieving anything as pay still same regardless..

Can I add that what Tracey said is absolutely correct as I just completed the 20 months top-up course for midwifing as I was already a qualified adult nurse, I would perhaps suggest to you to do adult nursing first and then seek to do midwifing .

As if you are doing midwifing first then you can't do adult nursing without going back to university for 3 years and as a student again as well which isn't worth doing. You have a more specialised fields in adult nursing compared to midwifing like.

If it was me in your position I would certainly go adult nursing first and then see about the midwife course later on if you wanting a wider choice in nursing then adult nursing will suit you more.

What is your preferred option between adult nursing & midwifing as chose the one that you want to actually do. You said midwifing your best option so go and become a midwife then as if not do adult nursing as only you can decide which branch of nursing you really want to do.

End of the day the pay as a newly qualified nurse is same across all nursing fields and having another degree isn't giving you anymore money either.
