Slums of hope or slums of despair?’ Which do you think best describes urban slums in LIC/NEE cities?
Use evidence from the resources booklet and your own understanding to support your answer.
A judgement can be stated or implied.

Some ideas for you to think about
- The architecture and built environment. Crowded and easy spread of communicable diseases (especially Covid), cramped living conditions, low quality building materials, lack of privacy and personal space.
- Lack of economic opportunities and job opportunities, people of low socio-economic status and idea of self-deprivation due to cumulative causation and combination of environmental factors. Other demographic indicators such as lack of schools, or high number of people per doctor.
- Inadequate sanitation, no running water, no electricity, informal or unregulated settlements poorly built.
Conclude with ideas about contribution to emotions of demotivation and disempowerment
