MAT Questions

Hey, I have a few questions about the MAT and I was wondering if anyone could answer any of them.

You take the MAT in November, but do you receive your actual result, and if so when do you receive the result by (do you receive it before the UCAS deadline).

The entry requirements for Warwick and Imperial state that they advise students to take either the MAT or STEP, but for Warwick it also says there’s an offer without the MAT. How would I know which offer I would be given - I’d find out after I’ve applied to the Universities right ?

Finally, what score should I be aiming for in the MAT to receive an offer from Warwick? I know the test is out of 100 with 40 marks for multiple choice (4 per question) and 60 for the longer questions.

From some of the practice I did during year 12 I would generally get 7 or 8 out of 10 for the multiple choice, but those longer questions were very tough. Hopefully I improve now I’m focusing on MAT preparation

Thanks for any advice given

I take it you've seen
https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/maths/admissions/ug/aeastep/
It doesn't answer your questions exactly but it does state that the mat score varies year on year. You also have the possiblility of sitting step/tmua. Why not drop them a line on the linked email with the specific queries you have? If nothing else, this reply is a bit of a bump for you :-)

For general mat/oxford there are score histograms in the reports for each paper
https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/study-here/undergraduate-study/maths-admissions-test
youre looking at about 70%+ to be in the mix for Oxford.

1. You don't get the results until after you've received a decision from Oxford or in March from Warwick/Imperial.
2. You'd find out after you applied- no you wouldn't know your mark when they gave you this offer.
3. You don't need the MAT for Warwick- it only helps you get a reduced offer, idk what we should be getting for that reduced offer though lol

Terrified I'm gonna tank it :frown:

Cheers, I’m also nervous about the MAT, those longer questions are a pain to answer.

As for what score you should be aiming for, the entry requirements section on this webpage says that a score of 64 on MAT has been sufficient to receive the non-STEP offer in previous years: https://warwick.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/mathsbsc/

Thanks for that information, I never saw that before on their website, I think they added that in recently.

Definitely won’t get 64 on the MAT can’t lie.

If my predicted grades are A*A*A*, an offer could be for those three grades without an entrance requirement right ?

I see myself getting only around 50 on the MAT tbh.

Tbh I think it's likely they will ask you for a grade 2 in STEP then.

Some years they have accepted A*A*A* but I don't think they are this year.
