If you ticket gets inspected at any point, it's highly unlikely that they won't be able to stop that it's an Advance ticket before punching it. If you get caught using it, you'll either be asked to buy a new ticket, where you won't be able to use your railcard, or you'll be fined. Since it's unlikely you'll be using the Advance fare ticket by accident, I'd say that you're even more likely to get fined.

In summary: it's not worth the risk.
If it's an advance ticket, you wouldn't even get through the barriers anyway, and where there are no barriers, there are inspectors.

Basically, don't.

Ive been before and not been checked, and when they did check they didnt ask for the ticket with the time on it, but then my gf says she has been asked for both bits, hmm
 For the small saving that you make on most routes, I wouldn't say that it's worth the risk of getting checked and fined.
small!
Manchester to London £22 return advance.
However I've never had a ticket that wasn't checked.
No chance.
You probably won't be able to get passed the ticket barriers for a start.
Then if you do, and the ticket is checked, you will have to buy a new ticket for the full price. Not worth it.
