Hey there fellow geographers! Thought since other subjects have done this, we should have our own thread

Name: Pixie
BA or Bsc: Bsc
Subjects for uni: Geography/Geology/Environment/Geoscience/Earth Science (Hopefully a mix of those)
Studying Currently: On gap year...
Universities applying to: Not sure, can't decide! They all look so good! Although probably Durham, Exter, Reading and possibly Cardiff or UEA will be in the mix!

Have you been to any open days yet? Any stand out for you?

I really liked Reading - even with it hammering it down all day and Southampton was pleasant but not for me.

With Bournemouth I discovered that I wanted a campus uni rather than a multi site, but the town is lovely!

Yeah, I think I'd want a campus too.

Went to exeter today, it was brilliant. It has the highest tree to student ratio of any university campus in the UK XD It works, because although its pretty big the scenery is really nice. There are some parts where you would feel like you're next to a building in the middle of a forest. Really good facilities, mostly quite modern but it has old and 20th century buildings too. Huge geography department. The guy told us that if your predicted grades meet the offer (AAA-AAB) then you're very, very likely to get an offer, which is very promising. The modules offered are also top notch, as someone who's on the borderline between BA and Bsc I found the BA, human geography modules offered to be more fascinating to me personally than the Bsc ones, which is weird since its the opposite of what I thought about Durham (though I haven't been there yet). I think I'll probably end up making this one my insurance if I get an offer from an A* uni. They're doing another open day in September so if you're considering it definitely go! Though it can be quite out of the way (took me 4 hours to get there and back!)

Im thinking of taking geography! I've been researching and i reckon Reading, Nottingham or Bristol are likely, i live v close to exeter and i dont want to stay near home! I feel the grade requirements are quite high but hopefully i can motivate myself to get the AAB most unis desire!
I want to do human geography mostly because i find it most interesting! You guys been to nottingham or bristol uni?

AAB is a good target, so many ask for it as you said! I mean, even LSE ask for AAB...

Moving on, I'll probably be doing human geography too, though I might apply to 1 or 2 physical based courses if I prefer them- obviously it's different at each uni because geography is so broad. At exeter they told us geography encompassed every single subject out there- and that's pretty much true! I'll be visiting nottingham and bristol in two weeks, the 28th for Bristol and 30th for Nottingham I think  So that's quite convinient haha. Only problem I have with Bristol (though the course looks amazing!) is that it isn't campus based, and I think I'd really like the feel of living on a campus and that's why I loved exeter so much. But all will be revealed at the open days I guess!

Are you going to any open days?

BA or Bsc?: Not 100% sure yet but likely BSc/Physical Geography/Environmental sort of thing
Studying currently: Just finished my A2 levels in Geography, Maths and Philosophy & Ethics (I'm y13, applied to a different course but changed my mind so i'm taking a gap year and reapplying)
Universities applying to: Currently looking at York, Cardiff, Exeter, Reading, Royal Holloway and then Keele and Oxford Brookes for insurance choices. But it totally depends on my grades in August as although my predicted grades were good you just never know!

I looked round Leeds, Reading, UEA and Plymouth last year but for a different course. I loved Reading, thought UEA was nice but ugly haha, Leeds was nice but not for me and Plymouth was awful.
Just wondering, how do you decide which universities you like? Do you just get a feeling you'd prefer one over the other? What was different between reading and leeds?

When I walked onto Reading campus I just knew (sounds ridiculous haha), I just loved the feel of the place as soon as I got there and from then on everything just added to that. Leeds was very different and although I couldn't pinpoint anything that I didn't like about it it just didn't appeal so much. Reading is less city-central (although still v close) and has green fields etc and a lake, its a really nice atmosphere. Leeds is right in the city centre, you walk off a main street straight into the uni - I didn't really know where the uni started and the street ended! The library is amazing though and the facilities are excellent. Accomodation at Reading I thought was better though, more choice also. Both are really nice though its just totally down to your own opinion and what you prefer

I am still undecided between law and geography. I guess my AS results will help me decide.

I was deciding between geography and law early this year. But i realised the only reason i was considering law was because of the high paid careers that follow... :colondollar: Geography all the way!!!

What career prospects are there for geography?

Just so you know, the 'high paid careers' is somewhat a myth. According to unistats, the median graduate salary for a Cambridge lawyer is 19k after 6 months. For geography, the same figure its 22k. Where it really gets going is Economics, where at Cambridge, fetches on average 36k. Surprising, no? Though it could be argued that new lawyers earn far less than they would in a few years, compared to other careers which may not have such progression, but it's still something to consider.

Google is your friend  But to be honest, there isn't much that geography rules out apart from perhaps more specialist professions. I mean a fair few geographers go on to study for a GDL anyways!

Will do

Going back to Cambridge tomorrow for a 'geography conference' at Fitzwilliam. Should be interesting

Tbh Geography is very appealing to me, and hey I can still become a barrister with a geography degree. But it also leaves other avenues open.

I'm torn between physical geography, environmental geography, and a geography/geology course. idk which one to choose :s-smilie: which do you think the best is in terms of module topics (interesting, etc), job prospects, and grade/subject requirements?
