participles and verb tense

participles and verb tense

I am having a hard time understanding participles and verb tense. To my understanding a participle is a word formed from a verb that can function as an adjective? And of course I know that verbs have past, present and future tenses but then there is all these simple present, present perfect etc tenses and I can't wrap my head around it. Any help will be appreciated.
