NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) 2014

Hi guys (first time poster here),

I've got an offer for St Georges in London to do clinical engineering, and I have SOOOOO many questions....

Is there anyone else coming to this trust? or to London in fact?

Also do we just have to wait for the trust to contact us now? Because I didnt even get a confirmatory e-mail, I just so happened to be looking at the right time on the pathway portal and saw it! They only sent an e-mail once I had confirmed/accepted the offer....Has this happened to anyone else?

I read somewhere that we would have to attend a trainee day (like a meet and greet type thing) back at Birmingham in the summer, does anyone else have info on this?

Further up on this thread, it was said that we would discuss with the trust we're assigned in regards to where we would undertake the MSc portion of the STP... is this true :/? (say if I wanted to undertake my MSc at imperial, would I need to go through another interview for that?)

Thanks for reading my questions!!!

Kind regards,
a very stressed out person

Currently NSHCS should be sending our details to the trusts and hopefully they will get in touch with us over the next few weeks.
There is a induction day that everyone attends on the 19th September in Birmingham. http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=d8a96ea2b4e36889b52baa537&id=7f0844dea8&e=[UNIQID]#STP Induction 2014
Haven't heard of anything going on in the summer though.

With the uni part, you can't just pick any uni. The uni would have to been on the list that run the course, they can be found here...http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/explore-by-career/healthcare-science/training/nhs-scientist-training-programme-(stp)/nhs-stp-general-faqs-about-entry-in-2014/#a
So, from what I know, you have some input in which uni you go that runs the course you are specialising in.

Kings - London; First Choice :colondollar:

Hi H2014,

Congrats on your kings offer! That was my first choice too but it looks like you just about beat me :P! I'll be at my second choice St Georges so its all good (but it was so hard to decide between the two)! So far I think there's only one choice in terms of the uni that we can do our masters at (unless they procure more?), so we may be class mates next year and if so, I thought I'd introduce myself now so we both have a friendly face at the induction and thereon .

Best Wishes,
Maria

Hi Maria,

Great to hear from you! St Georges was my second choice too. My main reasons for choosing Kings was just convenience of travel and I knew a few trainees already based there. Otherwise there was really nothing between King's and St Georges for me.

I think you may be right in terms of where we do our master's, but regardless of that, it's great to be in contact with another clinical engineering trainee- we are only a few. In fact we may be the only two in London, if I remember correctly! I am sure there will be plenty of opportunities for us to meet, starting with the induction in Birmingham!

It sounds really silly but does anyone know whether the induction day in September is compulsory? I have a family wedding to attend in New York on 20th Sept which I would really like to go to!

Also hello to my fellow clinical engineers

Been offered a Genomics place in Plymouth. I know it would be really stupid of me to turn it down but it is the complete opposite side of the country (Im currently in Dundee) and it has crap connections up to Scotland.. no idea what to do and I have till tomorrow morning to decide. ahhh

Come to Plymouth! I'll be here  It's a really nice city, I've lived in and around here my whole life, and have worked at the hospital for nearly 5 years already (I'm in service). If you have any questions about Plymouth or the hospital then let me know (although I know nothing about the labs!)

Pretty sure it is compulsory. It's an induction all trainees have to do. You are told that you have to be available to start work from the start of September when you apply. You will have to attend this induction and then the local induction.

I've just been offered a place for Clinical Biochemistry with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Had pretty much resigned myself to not hearing anything now, so needless to say it came as a surprise!
Main issue now is that I can't figure out which hospital the post is actually based at, as the board covers the whole of the north of Wales. There seems to be Clinical Biochemistry labs in Wrexham, Bangor and Bodelwyddan - but no idea which one it would be - they are quite far apart!

I'm currently a second-year STP. I highly doubt its compulsory. Ultimately it will be down to the trainee's training officer, and any reasonable boss would allow you to take annual leave to go to a wedding the next day, and let you chat to other trainees to find out what you needed to know from the event.

I didnt think it was compulsory but i could be wrong. i'm hoping there will be nothing before the induction day as i'll be on a summer internship and i think that finishes on the 16th of september... so fingers crossed!

I'm based at Liverpool, you? Wow where's your summer placement? Hopefully will hear from them soon!

Thanks for the reply! That makes sense  how are you enjoying STP?

Ooo congrats! Is liverpool the trust where there were three places up for grabs? If so, then I wouldnt worry about the induction day as you'll have some clinical engineers up there with you to fill you in! I'll be based at St Georges south London.

As for my placement, its a 10 week manufacturing and managing projects placement at MERU (medical engineering resource unit) down in Epsom. Its a non-profit charity organisation that designs bespoke equipment for disabled children .
Has anyone heard from their prospective employer?

Nope.... Don't know whether I should e-mail them if I don't hear soon!

I emailed them over a week ago and I was told that, for Genomics, they were still trying to fill all the posts as some people had rejected their offers. They also said they would send names to the employers in 2 weeks time.....(I received their email exactly 6 days ago).

Although, I know that UHCW trust received the name of their trainee in Reproduction 2 weeks ago.

So I guess there is a bit more waiting to do.

I would've thought that for mine, med phys, that it would be done by now! So hopefully.... it will be by the end of next week!

No problem. I'm loving it personally, but I think the experience is very dependent on your location. Some places have very strict training rotas and plans, and others (like mine) let you plan and organize your own training, so you get out of it what you put in. Either way, be prepared for lots of work!

Sorry mazzat2009, I didn't see this post earlier and I would have replied.

You have no say in the uni you go to. None at all. Your trust is assigned a uni for each STP specialty, to which all of their trainees will go (Eg We are assigned Kings for Medical Physics, and Leicester(?) for Histopathology).

However, since you're a Clinical Engineer, it makes no odds either way, because you'll be at Kings on the Denmark Hill Campus - afaik its the only accredited uni for Clinical Engineering.
