It varies between Trusts, but for mine it's £3k a year for training expenses. That is supposed to pay for my laptop, accommodation, travel and conferences. I don't get any money for subsistence though.

I'd be interested to know where people are staying for Liverpool. A current trainee has suggested Vine Court and Broadgreen Hospital accommodation to me. I'm probably going to be staying up there for the whole 4 weeks as any train trips back to Plymouth would have to be at my own expense and probably wouldn't be worth the hassle to effectively be home for a day and a half!

Hi thanks a lot for that info will get on to my training officer and discuss it with them! Wow 2-3K for 3 years doesnt seem like a lot considering the inital 6 weeks may cost in excess of £1500!

If you dont mind me asking how you going to eat for 6 weeks if your staying in a hotel lol

Eating does create an issue.... if the hotel includes breakfast then a really big breakfast! Maybe try and make a deal with a hotel to include an evening meal and a good rate?
My own cooking facilities would be great but I don't see that happening at a reasonable price.

£3k a year sounds like loads for expenses! That would be good though! Means not worrying about hotel costs! Hopefully mine is the same!!

Is anybody still waiting to hear from their trust? I've heard from the university I am studying at and enrolled on their course, I'm just slightly worried as I want to know a start date. I emailed my department but didn't get a reply, just wondering if anyone else is in the same situation?
Has anyone received their DBS certificate? How long did it take from the date of issue for you to receive it?

I tracked mine, and it says on the website that it was dispatched on the 11th of July, but I still have not received the certificate. Is that normal?

Hey I am also going to be in Bristol doing urodynamics. What are people doing about accommodation? I am not sure what to do as the first rotation is for 6 weeks (in Newcastle for me).

I only have a week at Nottingham then the rest is distance learning via podcasts. Guess ill sort out some kind of hall-type accommodation in that week. The university should be able to advise you!

Going to Newcastle for 6 weeks and finding accommodation is stressing me out also. Having my car in Newcastle is a must but at the same time it's expensive to park. I'm worried about staying in the hostel also sharing a public dorm would be horrendous. Hopefully will meet some people in Birmingham at the induction day and we can arrange a private dorm. That's at least something!

Have you tried looking into short term accommodation either at the uni or hospital? It's a lot cheaper than hotels and would give you the option of self-catering.
For everyone looking at short term accommodation in Newcastle, I just thought I'd mention that there's a letting agency called Week 2 Week which seem to do short term lets of flexible duration. They've got a website and can also be found on Right Move. Full disclosure: I have never used them or anything, and I don't know what their availability is like during this time period. I just thought some people might think it was worth looking into.
Hi everyone. I have a place doing Clinical Biochemistry in Birmingham and have been contacted by my trust and done the pre-employment checks etc. But haven't heard anything from Uni yet. I know Manchester Uni do the Biochem masters and I think people have already been contacted by Manchester if that's the case. But I also heard that Birmingham Uni will be offering it this year, although have yet to hear anything from them. My contact at the pre-employment checks had a start date of 1st Sept and I was told that I'd have a two day induction into the trust on 1-2 September. What I wanted to ask is apart from the trust induction (which may differ from trust to trust) is the Uni block the first thing that we do?? I'm trying to gauge my start date, and most Uni's start end of Sept/early Oct so that would be fine, but since my contract start date is 1st Sept I was wondering if it's likely that I'll be starting in hospital form then on and then doing the uni block whenever that starts or is it more likely that I'll have the induction and then nothing until the uni block (except the induction day in Birmingham too of course)?

Anyone have any knowledge about what's most likely in this case? And also anyone know about Birmingham offering the Biochem Masters? Or anyone worried that they still haven't heard from their Uni!?

I would have thought that following your Trust induction, you will be in the department until you go to uni. There will be departmental inductions to do and different people to meet, as well as loads of stuff to sort out. Plus there's the STP induction day. Hope that helps

Hi,
I'm also doing Clinical Biochemistry, although I'll be doing the Masters at Manchester. There's a link on this page though - http://nshcs.org.uk/nhs-scientist-training-programme - under 'University Providers', that lists Birmingham as an option for it.
I'd assume that if Manchester haven't contacted you, then you'll be doing it at Birmingham.
I still don't have a start date from my trust, just 'some time at the end of September'.
Hey, does anybody know if there is a difference between an already specialised offer and a non specialised offer? Do you do the rotations in the first year regardless?

You always do the first year rotations, but for an already specialised offer they've already assigned your sub-specialism for years 2 and 3. Basically, they probably want a trainee in one area in particular, so that's what they've asked for  Doesn't mean to say there isn't a remote possibility of you being able to pick a different sub-specialism though. For a non specialised offer, you would get to pick your own sub-specialism, in theory anyway.

Thanks! That's very helpful to know

Are you me? Exact same situation. Not heard from trust, enrolled on uni course, registered on STP induction. I asked for a contact at my trust and emailed them but havent heard anything back after a week. Not really sure what to do, just emailed NSCHS again to ask them. Whereabouts is your trust/ what is your stream? I'm Audiology.

I'm audiology too! I'm at imperial healthcare trust in london, its good to know someone else is in a similar situation. I gave them a call but unfortunately the head of department wasn't in so they took a message for me, which trust are you at? I know it can take a bit of time to get pre-employment checks done etc so I really hope we both hear soon!

I'm doing Urodynamics at Sheffield. I've spoken to my hospital and I have to pay for the 6 weeks in Newcastle. I'm a little worried about the cost - I'm struggling to find anything cheaper that £700pm, not including food or travel! Has anyone found anything in Newcastle?
