NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) 2014

Hey I wonder if anyone can help me, I'm going into my second year at uni studying BSc biology with microbiology and the NHS STP sounds amazing, a lot of people who have previously applied mentioned PhDs, can you apply with just a regular BSc? Also what experience do I need? I want to make my application as strong as possible which is why I'm looking so early, hopefully wanting to do either microbiology of some kind or reproductive science, both very different but so interesting, does anyone have any advice for me? I have some experience in a hospital from a couple of years ago and hopefully will get some more next year, thanks

You can apply with a BSc as long as it's a 2:1 or higher. If not, you'd need to do a relevant masters or PhD. As for experience, you don't strictly need anything specific, but the more you have the stronger your application will be - so any extra lab work/hospital experience will help. In addition, once you know what specialism you want to apply for, try and find a current STP doing that, they'd be the best person to ask for application and interview advice.
Thanks, yeah it's just a few people on here had a 1st and then did a PhD and I can really compete with that! Also do you know how many places there are for each specialism? I appreciate the help  I think my degree is more relevant to the microbiology sections however I just love the idea of reproductive science so I'm torn, thanks

The number of places for each specialism varies each year, here's a list of the available posts from this year - http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/media/1882108/posts_by_location_09-04-14.pdf

You can apply for two specialisms, so there's nothing stopping you applying for both, though it might make it tricky to tailor your application towards two very different specialisms - my application was certainly more suited towards Biochem than microbiology, so wasn't surprised when I got an interview for Biochem but rejected for microbiology.

Hi, for those going to Newcastle for the MSc.. Been looking into short term holiday lettings as an option. Wondered if anyone would be interested in "buddying up" to share somewhere? Or are most thinking they will stay in the hostel suggested in the accommodation guide sent?
Seen a few potentials:

They have a lot but it depends on availability I guess. I can email if people are interested.

Works out as £820 for the 6weeks if four sharing. I am sure we could discuss twin beds and even maybe negotiate a price  About £20/night

Not as s****y, but close to Uni. And cheaper.
This might be a better option than a hostel and works out around the same price but obviously a lot more luxurious!! More of a base.
Let me know if anyone is interested or knows a better way to organize something like this - hard to organize before any of us meet

Hi,

The day I got your message was the day I put down a deposit for an apartment in Newcastle.. gutted! I found a great place though on airbnb which was pretty reasonable! Good luck on finding a place !
Hello,

I have an STP cardiac science position with Manchester hospitals and was hoping I could track down the other people who have positions at Manchester. I was wondering what your plans were for going down to Birmingham on September 19th and whether you would want to go down together.

Thank you

Helena
Hi, I'm currently studying for an Mchem (chemistry) but was not sure whether that would be good enough to apply for a position next year. I'm also unsure what position would match the chemistry degree since the online matches only says physical science. Is there anyone that is on the STP/ applied for the STP with a chemistry degree and if not what should I apply for to give me the best chance. Thanks in advance

Hi, I'm studying cardiac science at Newcastle and I've chosen to stay at the euro hostel. Is anyone else planning to stay there too?

Is it saying it is on hold?
Phone the number that comes up on the finance page. I called that number and they took the hold off and I could then complete the registration. I think it is because it is funded through sponsorship.

Has anyone been accepted for clinical engineering in Kings yet? I thought that the application was just a formality, but they are taking some time in getting back to us.

Just to let you know that I recieved the offer from Kings for the MSc about two weeks ago. Hope you have too.

Hi,
I've just seen your post. Have you decided on anything yet?
I'm now enrolled on the MSc for Neurosensory at Aston - staying at the nearby Premier Inn - who else is going?

Yes I did, thanks!

I was also wondering for those already on the STP programme, what is the typical dress code? Am I correct in thinking it's formal enough but a full suit would not be required? Or will we be wearing a uniform? Thanks for any advice!

Hi

Yeah I just decided today on the eurohostel as its fairly cheap and a good location.

What are your plans? What specialism are you?

Hi all.

I just wondered if anyone knows what happens if you quit part way through the stp? I have started recently but not sure if this is the right thing for me anymore and something has cropped up making being away from home difficult. Can you quit like a normal job with a notice period?or are you liable for the money they invested in you? I am still waiting on a contract!

Thanks
