Is a degree worth doing anymore

It used to be that science was a guaranteed job but I hear things have turned around in the past few years and now it's become equally as difficult for many science grads as it is for arts and humanities grads.

It depends on the science, really. The environmental, chemical and physical sciences are generally still in demand, whereas the life sciences (biology, psychology etc) are becoming a little oversubscribed. It also varies from country to country depending on economies, industries and so forth.
Its only three years of your life, which on completion will not only better yourself and improve your chances of success, but also, you'll have a fantastic time, meet new people and have the chance to gain some independence. The loans argument is pretty silly considering how little is actually is, when considering the amount you'd pay back in relation to your average sort of salary. Not only this, but by having a degree, you're not restricting yourself as much. Even if you go into an industry/role that doesn't require a degree, having one there will give you a higher ceiling in terms of what positions you can work in.

Also, considering the pretty poor opportunities in terms of current employment, you can view it as a chance to escape the climate and, with the current improvements we're seeing, we might be in a better state upon your graduation - opening up more jobs in the graduate field etc.

I'd say it is worth it. You're only bettering yourself and boosting your cv by doing one, with very little drawbacks that go along with it.
