so what does he do day to day?

Similar to a normal MP - answer to his constituents and vote on Whip issues, with additional responsibilities.

You would however expect CoE to monitor daily economic activities, review reports both from the government and the business world and periodically examine the economy to adjust his/her upcoming budget to continue economic growth (or prevent recessions) on the sidelines.

In the event of possible recessions the CoE may introduce emergency budgets (albeit only done twice in the past two decades) otherwise he or she would present their annual budget (revenue and spending of country) in House of Commons every year.

CoE will also co-ordinate with other departments - particularly Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and Work and Pensions (DWP).

CoE will also heavily be involved in UK Export Finance by utilising diplomatic missions to promote trade with other nations, often by assisting UK corporations to win contracts, set trading targets between nations as well as reviewing trade balances actively to take action against deficits to prevent dependency.

CoE will also review innovation to set out strategic policies for the UK economy (not often, but things like "Northern Powerhouse" are a very good example, and London hegemony was an example of Labour before that)

CoE will also stay in contact with other non-ministerial Government Offices such as the Actuaries, Competition and Markets Authority, National Savings & Investment Bank, Serious Fraud Office, UK Statistics Authority and obviously UK Trade and Investment - in order to receive consistent updates on UK's position and be vigilant of "shock" issues, such as stock market index crashes.

Think that's about as non-biased as you can get.

George Osborne is lovely
