Middle Eastern studies: Leiden (NL) or SOAS?

Hi all,

I was recently accepted to Leiden University's Middle Eastern studies (2-year) Research MA program and SOAS's (1-year) MA in Near and Middle Eastern studies. Chances are great, I have been told, that if I opt for Leiden, I'll be able to spend a semester at SOAS as an exchange student.

Still, I am not sure what program to chose. Finances aside, what program would you pick, considering I aspire a PhD in the US? You think doing a 2-year research master is helpful, or would you go for SOAS? I was told a PhD in the States often involves a MA/MPhil. Thanks!

Hi! Very interested to read your post! I am a current ResMA Middle Eastern Studies student at Leiden. I just finished my first year. I did my undergrad at St Andrews, and immediately applied for both there and SOAS and was accepted in both, but due to financial issues at the time I couldn't start then. I delayed, and when I looked again at fees and other issues, I saw that SOAS had risen greatly.

I decided to come to Leiden because my tutors at St Andrews highly recommended it, and I have not been let down. I really enjoy the courses they teach here and yes they do allow you to do your semester abroad at SOAS, though I would make sure you get your application in in plenty of time!
