I've applied to study maths at uni but I think I hate it

Hi so I've applied to Warwick, Bristol, Leeds and Durham to study maths and economics and I have offers from the first 3 (2 from Warwick) and am waiting for Durham. I was really struggling to choose what to study because there's nothing I particularly wanted to do but in the end settled for this combination as they're my 2 best subjects and knew I didn't want to do a single honours degree. I've already got 2A*s in maths and further maths and am now in year 13 and doing step. I was doing some questions today and I kind of had a realisation that I really don't enjoy it, I don't do maths for fun and don't like it when I do do it. I don't know what to do!!

I dropped out of architecture 2 weeks after I enrolled and any later I would have had to pay the first term of fees. I think there is a 10-14 day period you can drop out until you owe them, so you basically have then to decide if you want 3 years of maths

Thank you for replying, I'm not very good at quitting things no matter how much I hate them and my parents really really don't want me to take a gap year and tbh there was nothing else I wanted to study! But I know I want to go to uni arghh I just don't know!!!

I don't know how difficult it is to get a place where you're going, but I originally applied for international tourism management and a week before enrolling I asked to swap to architecture and all admissions asked for is a new personal statement, they changed it immediately.

Think what kind of job you want, and I know that some banks, corporate businesses and hotels do graduate programs even if you did something like fine art.
What is it that you don't like about maths? I personally really disliked doing step style questions which are very pure, but quite enjoy maths that I can see being practically applied.

Have you looked into degrees around applications of maths e.g. Engineering/ Computer Science? (Also these subjects tend to be quite broad initially, and specialise later on in the course).

Maths at uni is slightly different to Maths at A-level. I didn't sit STEP so I'm not sure how similar it is to Analysis and Methods, two areas you'd study in Maths, but you'd also be studying Algebra (which you may not have come across before) and some Probability / Stats and possibly some Computing. It is tough, and the pure stuff isn't really that interesting to me (but some people do enjoy it) but it's the only think I could demonstrate any interest in so here I am.

But, seeing as you like Maths and Economics, have you considered Accounting and Finance? Maths is only a part of it (and I doubt that it's as heavy as the Maths in a Maths degree) and you also get to do Economics, Law, Accounting, Finance and even one Computing module at the uni that I go to. It's a course I would've been very interested in (well, that and MORSE) had I been able to demonstrate any interest in Economics or Finance at the time.

A maths degree is not for everyone who is good at maths. Which modules did you enjoy? Is it just STEP?

You can probably ask to change course but I'd speak to a teacher who knows you well. I'd also look at some of the topics on the course - it may be that you want to look at other unis.

I's good that you are questioning now as there is plenty you can do to make sure you end up on a course at a uni that you love

Taking a gap year to have a good think might also be a good idea.
While you/your parents might not like the idea of a gap year, it is worth considering as it would give you time to think about what you really want to do. The alternative is potentially wasting a lot of time and money on a course you won't enjoy!

I think I want to go to Durham and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be that easy to swap :/ and I don't even know what I'd swap to!

I think I'm the same, I do really like the applications of maths but I'm just not sure I like it enough to make up for the parts I really really don't like!

I originally wanted to do computer science but went off that after doing computing AS! And I don't do physics so couldn't do engineering anyway!

Hi, would you say you really loved maths at school or just that you liked it more than your other subjects? And are you enjoying the course overall?

I know and I never thought that a maths degree was for me and that's probably why I didn't want to do a single honours degree! But I've ended up applying for it cos there was nothing else I wanted to do and now I'm worried I've made a mistake!

I really enjoyed D1 D2 S2 and FP1 but was less keen on the others and tbh I can't really remember cos I did some of them so long ago! I just find step questions so difficult and don't enjoy the challenge of trying to work them out and I feel like that's gonna be a big part of the course at uni?

I liked it more than any subject, though I'm not sure that I loved it. I loved the things that I studied at A-level, but I wasn't the type of student to do further reading on the fundamental theorem of calculus or an introduction to Analysis/Algebra, tackle step problems in my own time etc.

Overall I am happy. There are very few other courses that I could see myself doing, and a Maths degree will definitely get me where I want to go (if I'm good enough in other aspects) in the future. There are some elements of the course that I don't like but you just have to put up with it and do the best that you can.

Ok thanks, I'm definitely not that kind of student aha! That's made me feel a bit better, hopefully I'll just be able to focus on the good parts!
My only concern about the gap year thing is that I thought for maths degrees, universities don't like students taking gap years cause they lose their math ability

Oh my god, you are literally in the same situation I was in last year. I never really knew what I wanted to do with my life or what to study at uni. I got A*s in Maths and Further and I also prepared for STEP exams in my final year. I didn't enjoy those exams either and I never did maths for fun in my spare time, ever.
Maths was always my best subject and so I figured why not, and applied to study maths, thinking it would be easier as I was good at it. I am now a first year Maths student in Uni and I could not have been more wrong.

What teachers don't really stress enough about these days is how different uni is from school, sixth form, etc... Maths taught at GCSE and even A level is a matter of understanding how to solve a problem, using methods teachers teach you (basically make you memorise). Uni maths is understanding how these methods work, where do they come from? How would you prove them? It is not just a bunch of calculations, and honestly it is kinda stressing me out. I'm struggling already and thinking that this degree may not be for me yet due to my personality, I would not quit and leave uni (too stuborn for this to be an option ).
I am not saying this to put you off doing a Maths degree. You could have a completely different opinion about it once you start. The only advice that I could give you at this stage is to research other options. However keep in mind that though this degree is hard, no other degree is going to be piss easy. No matter what you apply for the level of difficulty will increase a lot, maybe being the reason why you won't enjoy it at first. I personally wouldn't take a gap year as in my eyes it is really a waste of a year. There are so many people at uni, even on my course who were on a different degree e.g civil engineering, biochemistry, etc... and have now swapped to do maths after their first year. You could always leave and apply somewhere else, nobody will stop you, and don't be afraid to do so. You have amazing grades so I'm sure you will be successful regardless of where you end up. Just focus on your exams for now and don't stress out about what you want to do in the future. I'm in uni and I still have absolutely no clue!
Good luck!!!
