"So, would you call producing a soap opera (One that actually appeal to a REAL audience, a mickey mouse task!?, a soap that will actually be of interest to people, a soap that has the potentail to appeal to a diverse range of audiences, one whereby the audience can relate to the characters and where you think very carefully about the lighting, camera angle, shot size in order to convey certain things in order to appeal to a particular audience, would you have the ability edit a whole soap opera with the means of an editing machine"

haha is that what you had to do? hmm i think in that case, yes it is a mickey mouse subject! what a load of balls!
It maybe a Mickey Mouse subject but it is still an A Level and it some have some difficulty in it as people still get Us.

Shows the kind of people who take it! To the soap opera person, fair enough it may be "challenging", but if you compare it to a subject like maths, it is by no means on the same level or as respected. Whatever you think isn't the same as what uni's think...and in the long run, its the uni's opinion that counts when choosing courses.
I despise Media Studies I have no respect for it; however to someone else its still a course they (stupidly) took for 2 years and they do deserve some sort of qualification (How about a B-Level?)

LOL! You just summarised my point more bluntly. I doubt media studies is useful for anything - even journalism! But in a sense I suppose its more vocational...maybe it should be a GNVQ instead...

i think that although media studies is not easy , i think it is definately an easier subject.i think that the more traditional subjects like maths econonic will get you somewhere and you are guarenteed that universities will accept them. but with subjects like business studies they are not regarded as highly.

Media Studies may be quite difficult, but it has no real relevance to the world of work and acadmica, so I think it shouldn't be available as an academic A-level but maybe as a Vocational A-level.

Economics has nothing to do with numeracy. Business Studies is a waste of time - how many succesfull business people do you think took this subject? You learn a lot of pointless jargon about firms, Business Studies won't help you get a job in the City or high up in business, because everyone knows its mickey mouse

i don't quite understand how u work that 1 out about business studies ?? well what subject exactly do you study if you want to get a job high up in business?? my bro did bus. studies at A level then from that did a degree in business management and now has a good job because of that so......u learn alot of pointless jargon about firms lol, do u actualy take business studies?? what subjects r u taking??? maths, further maths and even further maths? and maybe physics?

I find that a lot of poeple seem to think that Economics is the harder version of Business Studies. I'm currently studying AS Economics and I've gotta say it's a lot easier than the other subjects I'm doing. I've seen the work that a lot of my freinds do for BS and that actually seems of a similar level of difficulty. The only difference seems to be there's a lot more 'common sense' stuff in BS which most people could do without revising.
If you want to do a job 'high up in business' then subjects such as maths and physics which require a lot more work and show better mathematical ability will get you far. Also Business Studies is more specialised than other subjects so probably closes off more job opputunities than it opens. Just because you know one person who did well from doing BS it doesn't mean that all BS graduates will do just as well. You have to compare this one person to the thousands of BS graduates who are currently unemployed or in low paid jobs.

personally i do think it is a simplier, easily A level.

i have a friend who did media studies last year for As and also did philosophy.

he got an A in media studies (very nearly 100% i think too)
he got a U in philosophy

u can argue that he has a differnt work ethic for each one blah blah blah but the difference does tell you something.

what annoys me is that when ppl get A's for media studies and their ilke and then you have people doing "harder" subjects like history and points score for unis (on paper) it makes no difference, therefore media studies should be vocational.

i do Eng lit, history and philosophy and get p*ssed off when media studies ppl just sit there doing stuff that isnt even worth talking about and then get good grades,

arghhhhhh!!!!!!

Mathematical ability is not neccessary at all to get a job 'high up in business', most of the skills needed are from an arts side, certainly not Science and not so much Maths. Maths is a very difficult subject but the career is not always lucrative after (apart from actuarys, but certainly not as lucrative as other specialisations.

Maths allways seems slightly detatched from the real world, due to the fact that, unlike most Arts subjects, it does not cover current affairs and other impacts which afect the world, just numbers.

Media Studies IS one of the most mickiest mickey mousish subjects available i'm afraid. Sorry but it's true. But if you enjoy the subject then that shouldn't bother you though...

You learn a lot of pointless jargon about firms, in economics you do get a good look at the theory of the firm, but you also look at the national and international economies to better understand the world we live in. Business Studies won't help you get a job in the City or high up in business, because everyone knows its mickey mouse

How comes I know someone who graduated from Nottingham with a BA Management Studies that has now landed a place in investment banking in the City?

The problem is media is a new subject and people dont like change and UNIS in UK dont change 4 anything.

i took media and dropped it as it was 2 hard and i take history instead so it aint Mickey mouse it is a hard course u need to be 100% dedicated.

Your right.. its not a Mickey Mouse subject. Especially since the world today seems to revolve around the media. I did the AQA syllabus for AS- more than 60 per cent of my class failed so it can't be that easy.. unless my classmates are really dumb (which there not)..

Well done ele on 600 posts! Youll be a mod soon

I do Maths and I find it has NO RELEVANCE WHATSOEVER to the world - definitely less than media studies (which I took at GCSE and thoroughly enjoyed).

To those saying business studies is easy - I would disagree and say it is on a par with maths (but maybe thats just cos Im good at maths) ... I did worse in business than in maths at AS level

Yay! lol- I didn't even notice that! Thanks

I do maths.. and find it mind-numblingly boring. My teacher says its good for "sharpening the brain" (!?).. I think a lot of people who think Media is easy say that because they know its a lot of fun!
