English language dissertation ideas & examples

Hi guys!

I've just finished second year of studying English language, and I'm thinking about what to do as a dissertation next year. At the moment, I don't really have a clue!

I'm interested in digital communication (however I am taking this as a module afterwards), language and philosophy (I'm aware this is broad but I don't know much about it yet!), language in context, and to be honest many more of the topics of English language - that's why I don't really have a clue what to do. I want to get a bit of reading done over summer so I'd like to narrow it down soon.

Anyway, does anyone have experience of doing an English language dissertation and what was your topic? I'm interested to hear some examples.

Thanks in advance :h:

Two things you should consider before doing extensive research; if you pick your dissertation topic is it:

1) free choice, but relies on lecturers specialisms?
2) if it isn't free choice, then you do not know which topic/titles that your programme will be offering until you start final year.

So, I would recommend you email the programme leader, asking what happens. Cause if you have picked your final modules (including dissertation), then I would also assume that you should of signed or given a dissertation proposal sheet in by now?

If you're interested in DC, then find out what aspects within DC you like and dislike and then begin from there.

It is free choice, and I will be given a supervisor depending on which lecturer's specialisms suits my chosen topic best.

Unusually we haven't been asked to provide a proposal sheet at all yet, even though we've picked our final modules. That's something that's seemed a bit strange to me because I know many others who've already written their proposals, but I won't do mine until next year!

I'll definitely be looking into digital communication to see if there are any aspects I'm really interested in, but I'd really like to see some examples for inspiration and just to see the style of question I could hone it down to. I'm struggling to think of something specific enough!

Thanks for your reply!

Doesn't your uni dept. have a list of lecturer's interest/specialisms?

Why don't you check your library's database on digital communication. You could read some chapter heading and see if you can get some inspiration from it. Or, what I did - I looked up "dystopian literature syllabus" to give me inspiration for books and topics for my dissertation. You could do the same thing and see if anything pops to mind in terms of topics you want to do.

Try posting in the dissertation thread, you might get a more specific reply!
