The English are pretty reserved anyway. I was with a Greek girl once at the cinema (the ice cream/seating area) and she was like "Everyone is like little mice"

my point exactly. you don't take your aggravations out on the people that piss you off. you go round telling all your other friends.

England has a serious behind-the-back-bitching culture. it's really quite bad. under the surface tensions always there and rarely resolved unless an outside party forces it.
look like someone said, you don't know how much your post/thread reads like a xenophobic/racist one.

people are brought up differently. I'm classed as an international although you'd think I'm English but I'm not white. i integrate with both english and international students but find it's WAY easier to integrate with the international's because really they are quite nice and open.think about it, why would they want to isolate themselves when they're in a foreign country, maybe want to learn better english and have the best fun they can since they're at uni and this is supposedly the best years of their lives. all international students i've spoken to from when i was at college and now at university, say they only stick with their own nationalities because it's easier for them and quite frankly it's less scary. they don't have to work harder to make friends, they don't have to worry about the language barrier (if language is an issue), they don't feel the need to prove themselves so they can 'belong', they also don't want to be looked down at or differently because they're 'internationals' and because of the attitude you've got - that they're internationals and they either study/don't make friends/stick to themselves.

international students want to know people, it helps them on so many levels, but because they've been given a stereotype, and because home students think they'll automatically stick to themselves, they rather prefer to avoid the disappointment/fear and if they try to no avail, they eventually stick to themselves. wouldn't you rather stay in your comfort zone rather than stick yourself out on a limb only to be rejected? think about that.

have you considered that maybe your nigerian housemate, just has a big mouth with a loud voice and is an attention seeker and loves to talk? i've met loads of nigerians, some similar to your housemate and others totally different. same goes for your other housemates. maybe they think you've got a complex or your attitude towards them isn't exactly welcoming so they'd rather not hang out with you? i'm not saying it's your fault, but it'd do you some good to consider it.

and if it's bugging you so bloody much, why don't you just have a word with them especially the nigerian housemate as she seems to be your biggest concern, and tell her that she's bothering you and to take her friends out. it's your house/flat/whatever, you're allowed to have rules or at least some sort. of guideline. and if she still bugs you by talking loud, then you fight back. bring more friends over, play loud music when she should be sleeping, do something other than whine and complain and make yourself look silly.

Hence the proliferation of prgrammes like Trisha, Jeremy Kyle etc?

His response was just a critique of your ridiculous thread.
I'm Danish/Mexican from Sweden residing at a British university. Of course I do not conform to all the British customs but I do an effort. And quite frankly, some of the British students drink so much I find it disgusting, so should I conform to that custom too? I don't think so

may i just say that is one of the most random combinations ever.

The ones that are quite content to import their xenophobia, and then export their education; who don't so much live 'with' you, as 'around' or 'in spite of' you.

Don't worry. Cambridge is a very accepting place I can assure you. Both Oxford and Cambridge have very important welfare reps in all colleges that will make sure you feel respected at all times. Also, Cambridge is the bastion of knowledge, and thus should also be the bastion of tolerance (at least that is true for Oxford).

Then why didn't you just contribute to the Housemate Horror Stories thread rather than make a thread which many people, especially international students studying in England, could take offence to? You're claiming now that nationality doesn't come in to it so why even bother?

Everyone is so taking this the wrong way and I have apologised for the misconceptions. I don't hate internationals. I hardly know any, I just wanted to see if other people's international housemates were as agitating as mine are hence why I said 'the most annoying nationality to live with'. Maybe adding the nationality bit in was racist I don't know, maybe I should have just said most annoying person to live with, I just put that cos I only live with internationals I guess I just wanted to see if other internationals were the same as mine!! Grrr. I can't be bothered to explain anymore, I didn't mean any mallice (sp?). Ah well.

Lol, this thread wasn't supposed to be racist just wanted to see if anyone else had annoying international housemates like me! All my international housemates seem to refuse to do anything English even though studying in England. They only want friends who are their nationality, eat their food, won't even drink damn tap water and take all the fridge space up with their stupid bottled water!!!

what do you mean by "anything English"?

i wasn't talking to you hon. someone said my response was ironic because of my username and i was correcting them. calm down. and yes putting the nationality bit was just asking for trouble.

anyways, i live with international students, there are 5 in my flat and we get on really well. that's my experience where i live now.

 First looks, I am thinking racism, stereotype. We can't hate all americans because of George Bush, all Iraqis cuz of S.Hussein, all the italian for the mafia. What i mean is that you can't just pick up specific unwanted properties with one or two and then generalize.

But I know exactly how you feel. I am asian (type brown) and went to a mixed raced school. We had the asian clan, the black clan, the chinese clan, the moshers, the goths and the hardcore chavs. I hated that and tried to socialise with everyone, but ended up sticking with the asian crowd most of the time.

I think it is more to do with who you feel most comfortable around and the boundaries you have. So much for intergrated britain !

couldnt live with nigerians, indians, chinese or americans.

could live with germans and mexicans

If internationals don't like the English culture they should stay in their own country as harsh as that sounds!!! I have no problem with internationals but if they aren't going to try and fit in with the culture then what's the point??? English don't talk as loud as my Nigerian housemate GODDDDDD.

I am a Scot, not international and still think that the English students are far more annoying than any international students.
