Home Office Check Postgraduate Loan

I recently submitted an application for a postgraduate loan through my existing SLC account. I was told that it would take up to 14 working days to process my application after they've received my evidence. I rang them after the 14 working day period only to be told that my application has been sent for a HOME OFFICE check I don't understand why they've done this when I sent them my ORIGINAL Immigration Status Document and other supporting evidence. The home office check can take anything from 3-12 working days. The SLC never contacted me to request further evidence. Is this normal procedure?? I'm feeling extremely frustrated.
