Learning french - advice?

(Sorry if this is off-topic, I couldn't figure out where to post it!)

I'm looking to learn French outside of college (not working towards a GCSE or A-Level or anything like that, just for the sake of learning). What would be a good way of going about this? I've heard of podcasts and websites etc that help you to learn, does anyone have any experience with them/reccomendations? Would I be best just to buy myself a GCSE revision guide and learn from that?

Any tips would be helpful

It depends on how you learn, but I personally find that writing something down over and over again helps me to learn French and German whereas listening to podcasts really doesn't work for me, but does for others. That said, I've found the Pimsleur Spanish course to be excellent, so if you can get hold of the French version, then learning the language to a good standard should be made much easier!
