A-level Art for the pleasure of learning

When I did my A-levels (STEM), I did an additional GCSE in Art (in one year) during the As year and managed a grade A.

That was quite a while ago but I kept dabbling in Art (water colours and pencil drawings) through the years. The skills have been very useful to me in engineering, enabling me to sketch perspective drawings to help others visualise my ideas and also it's helped enormously with spatial awareness when deciphering 2D engineering plan drawings etc.

I'd like to take it a stage further and not only draw and paint for pleasure to a better standard, but also to learn more about the fundamentals, history of art etc.

It's such a subjective subject, so how are marks awarded? What kind of artistic standard is required to achieve a grade A proficiency at A-level? How much effort is needed in say a two year course?

What did you hate most about your A-level and how useful have you found it to be in your professional life?

Thanks.
