A: on Trumps popularity, I do t want to get too much into this but when you consider that he won despite most of the experts saying he had no chance, plus added incumbency bonus I think he’s got a clear advantage. He’s not going to get impeached (and if they try very bad things will probably happen) and the democrats are all over the place with no real challenger other than creepy joe Biden or Bernie.

B: on your above point, which is more interesting

You’re right about Trump but I do think he also cares about being popular and his own vanity and that makes him useful to the Alt right agenda which is basically what people generally want- which is basically national socialism (although probably not if you tell them it’s that (at least for now))

the same could be true of Boris Johnson to an extent, despite being pretty socially liberal they’ve both been turned into literal hate figures on the left and so get the support of alt right types. In a way it’s kinda like what Andy Burnham types do as in pander to what socially conservative minorities want eg advocate for shariah law but for white people who want less immigration.

But even if he is delivering too much or it fails to deliver at least he is shifting the Overton window. In 2014 a Muslim ban would have been unthinkable despite most people supporting it.

I also wouldn’t say that the alt right brainlessly follow him. Eg when people thought he was going to seriously bomb Syria the Alt Right protested it and started openly talking **** about Trump (whether or not it was this that caused Trump to back down or not I don’t know, but if he tries to invade Iran or something the Alt right will not support him.
