Placement hours

The NMC requirement is 2300 over the 3 years so 700 in first year and 800 in second and third year.

Portsmouth appear to have a requirement of 750 in first year even though their handbook states 700.

Do other unis have different requirements for hours?
You’ll find they plan in extra hours to cover absence from placement through sickness etc.
Apparently it's 750 in actual placement hours, if off it needs to be made up. They say students must do 37.5 hrs a week in placement! Should that be 35 hrs?!

Clinical placements follow full time hours in the NHS, that’s 37.5 a week. I don’t know what Portsmouth’s policy on making up time is, but as I’ve already said, it’ll likely be to cover any absence through the entire course. It’s better to have a few extra hours than to get to the end of your course and not be able to register due to not having done enough.

Also, more time in clinical practice is usually a good thing, it means more clinical experience for you, hopefully making you a more confident and experienced practitioner on qualifying.

As @moonkatt ( :hi: ) says, your programme will always 'over provide' hours to allow you to miss some placement time for illness etc, but still be able to complete the minimum number of hours.

Some programmes are concerned with the total number of placement hours over the degree; others have a minimum number of hours during each placement/placement period before you are eligible for assessment. Best to check your programme's exact details.

It's very common for universities to require around 50-100 additional hours over the course of the degree. Often this is due to the individual agreements that the university have with the NMC. When the university register as a provider, they have to explain to the NMC what they are going to provide, and often some overshot of the required hours is included. Whilst it isn't a requirement of the NMC, achieving the additional hours is likely a requirement of the university in order to put you forward for registration, because of this agreement.
