do you need to write ' the book xxxx' or can you just say in xxxxx .... would the reader know that you are talking about thebook and its ok to skip ' the book' ?

Just put inverted commas around it. E.g. "While reading 'Watership Down', I was struck by Adams' description of the rabbits..."
